When communities are caught in the depths of conflict and oppression, and survival becomes part of everyday life, why do people continue to create? When arms and air raids, ceasefires and aid fail to bring an end to such situations, what can art offer and what can it change?
CREATE Film Festival seeks to examine and explore the issue of creativity in sites of conflict; to offer a unique opportunity to see not only the different ways in which creativity can fuel change, but the truly exceptional talent that exists in some of the world’s most challenging contexts, where people have to think creatively about everything in order to survive.
Creativity as resistance; as understanding; as peace building; as voice; as messenger; as an alternative. Film In Place of War.

"The Seven Tapes" is a cinematic journey into the world of Yona Wallach, a legendary poet, who's radical life and poetry ended in an early age, leaving behind a myth and a trail of admirers. More than 25 years after her death, seven recorded tapes from her last interview are discovered. In these tapes, Wallach confesses on her life journey: her attraction to madness, her experiments with drugs, her relationship with god and about the dangers of writing. The film weaves her testimony with interviews, with rare archival footage from the sixties to the eighties, with her poems and with animation that revives Wallach's thoughts, images and visions. THE SEVEN TAPES is a troubling encounter with an exceptional artist, whose riddle remains unsolved to this day.

Lee Chang-Dong discussed his film Poetry at a press conference following the In Competition film's screening Wednesday morning. The conference's general theme revolved around the meaning of "poetry," in the film's context as well as in Chang-Dong's personal point of view."Poetry is not just like a bouquet of flowers that is beautiful in itself," Chang-Dong expressed. "It is life. No matter the ugliness of the world, there's always something beautiful inside. That's what ...
Synopsis:
Mija lives with her middle-schooler grandson in a small suburban city located along the Han River. She is a dandy old lady who likes to dress up in flower-decorated hats and fashionable outfits, but she is also an unpredictable character with an inquisitive mind. By chance she takes a ‘poetry’ class at a neighborhood cultural center and is challenged to write a poem for the first time in her life.
Her quest for poetic inspiration begins with observing the everyday life sh...

What if our words could echo through time? What if the things we do to-day could inspire complete strangers without us ever knowing it? This film follows the ripple effect of our decisions and is meant to teach us to be grateful for all the things we have in our lives. Follow the journey of a homeless man as he struggles to get his life together, while a college student’s life gradually goes downhill. The 2 men are connected in a way they never knew. They are connected not only through time, but also through words.
Director: Frank Akino Beekman.

For the past two years, Shape of a Box has been an online forum for poets looking to have their work translated into film. Now we're reinventing ourselves and looking to raise the bar and become a showcase for international intersections of film and poetry.
Mentioned in the March/April 2010 issue of Poets & Writers, Shape of a Box is currently looking for submissions of film and video that respond to, interpret, or are based upon poetry.

Director: Ulf Kristiansen.
Based on 2 poems by William Blake, animation by Ulf Kristiansen.
Blake is building on the conventional idea that nature, like a work of art, must in some way contain a reflection of its creator. The tiger is strikingly beautiful yet also horrific in its capacity for violence. What kind of a God, then, could or would design such a terrifying beast as the tiger? In more general terms, what does the undeniable existence of evil and violence in the world tell us about the nature of God, and what does it mean to live in a world where a being can at once contain both beauty and horror? The open awe of "The Tyger" contrasts with the easy confidence, in "The Lamb," of a child's innocent faith in a benevolent universe.
By letting the tiger recite "the Lamb" , the tiger appears somewhat mephistotelian even though the lamb is not letting herself be seduced. The tiger is also less than impressed by the lamb’s poetry reading and seems to be planning his next meal.
Director: David Moolten.
Once a child laborer who trekked from Mexico to the fields of California to pick strawberries, Jose Hernandez recently traveled into space as an astronaut on the Discovery space shuttle. His story honors both the desperate struggle of immigrants and the greatness of which they are capable. This film and spoken word performance are a tribute.
