"Keep Quiet": Tribeca Film Festival 2016

What to do if you’re a raging anti-Semite and you discover your Jewish roots? As probed in the documentary Keep Quiet, it’s the stunner that Hungarian ultra-nationalist Csanád Szegedi began grappling with when his maternal grandparents were outed as Jews.  Keep Quiet opens by showing family snapshots in nostalgic black-and-white. Yet any stirring of sentimentality is quickly dashed with a caveat about what happens “when you base your story on a lie.&rdquo...

Hotel Transylvania 2, Review: Vampa ire

Hotel Transylvania 2, Review: Vampa ire When you want to turn horror into comedy, what better ploy than to make them animated/CGI characters? Add 3D to that, and the spell is cast. Only problem is, the funnier it gets, the less scary it remains, and vice versa. Like the passers-by in Hotel Transylvania 2, who are far from scared at the past-their-prime monster brigade’s pathetic attempts at instilling fear in them, the audience might find the proceedings short of being very scary or too...

Pawn Sacrifice, Review: Check this out, Mate

In the only Urdu/Hindi film he ever made, Indian cinema’s Bengali language grandmaster Satyajit Ray used chess as a metaphor, setting it against the backdrop of the crumbling Navabi rule over Avadh (Lucknow), and its imminent take-over by the British East India company. It was simply called Shatranj Ke Khilari (The Chess Players). Another chess film, a 30-minute short made in 1988, was called Queen Sacrifice. The present film manages with just a pawn sacrifice! Two feature-length recent ...

the Seven Tapes

Director: yair qedar.
"The Seven Tapes" is a cinematic journey into the world of Yona Wallach, a legendary poet, who's radical life and poetry ended in an early age, leaving behind a myth and a trail of admirers. More than 25 years after her death, seven recorded tapes from her last interview are discovered. In these tapes, Wallach confesses on her life journey: her attraction to madness, her experiments with drugs, her relationship with god and about the dangers of writing. The film weaves her testimony with interviews, with rare archival footage from the sixties to the eighties, with her poems and with animation that revives Wallach's thoughts, images and visions. THE SEVEN TAPES is a troubling encounter with an exceptional artist, whose riddle remains unsolved to this day.

Zlin FF Film In Focus: BROKEN PROMISE

The stories and lessons of the Holocaust remain a potent subject for films coming from Central Europe. Even almost 70 years after the tragic events unfolded, the interest in the subject and its human lessons remains a potent one in contemporary Czech culture. Now that it is free from the Communist yolk that all but repressed the subject (although the superb SHOP ON MAIN STREET, one of the revival highlights of this year's Festival, is an exception to the rule), Czech filmmakers con...
