Frank Capra

Shoplifters, Review: Only those who cannot study at home need to go to school

Shoplifters, Review: Only those cannot study at home need to go to school Through many decades, albeit once in a while, a Japanese film comes up in the rich tradition of Frank Capra, Vittorio De Sica, Satyajit Ray, Ritwick Ghatak, Mrinal Sen, and the better films of Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Back in the 30s, 40s and 50s, in the days of Yasujirō Ozu and Mikio Naruse, it was called neo-realistic cinema. Most of these films were made with non-star casts, on shoe-string budgets, had realistic styles...

Zootopia, Review: Viewtopia

Zootopia (known as Zootropolis in some countries) is Disney’s 55th animated feature, in 3D computer graphics. The theme--unlikely buddies teaming-up to solve a crime--is not exactly a novel idea in Hollywood productions, but buddy comedy-drama takes an entirely new meaning when the buddies happen to be a rabbit and a fox, and the villains are animals too, for this make-believe tale is set in Zootopia, a highly civilised, modern and automated mammal world, sans human beings. Though there ...

Directors’ Diaries, by Rakesh Anand Bakshi, Book Review: A dozen journeys, a dozen destinations

Directors’ Diaries, by Rakesh Anand Bakshi, Book Review: A dozen journeys, a dozen destinations Aspiring director and son of India’s renowned film-lyricist, late Anand Bakhshi, Rakesh Bakshi has been aspiring to make his first film for a real long time. In the meanwhile, he has been writing, cycling and doing his bit for the under-privileged of local society. So far, the trail to his big break has proven to be elusive. How elusive? How frustrating? As frustrating as that some of h...

Fallbrook Film Festival - The Frank Capra Award- Call For Films

Located in Southern California, Fallbrook and its surrounding communities is a beehive of creative energies: artists, sculptors, writers, actors, musicians, dancers, designers, and filmmakers. In 2006, the non-profit Fallbrook Film Factory was formed to foster filmmaking activities similar to community theatre, and out of that the Fallbrook International Film Festival evolved, now entering its fifth season. Fallbrook was also the family home to one of Hollywood’s all-time filmmaking legends Frank Capra during the height of his filmmaking career. To that aim, we have been most fortunate to gain the support of the Capra family, allowing us to host a very special award in his name. And this year, due to the strong support from the Hollywood stunt community, we are adding Action Films as an award category and workshops with top stunt directors, reveling this hidden art of filmmaking.
