As a disclaimer before watching Amy Scott’s ‘Hal,’ a loving and knowing documentary on the life of the seminal 70s auteur Hal Ashby, it’s a film for the ultimate cineaste. It’s for the filmgoer who prides his or herself on encyclopedic knowledge, bordering on obsession, of the “New Hollywood,” or as sometimes referred to as the American New Wave. Ashby, while an influential filmmaker of the 70s canon when he released 7 memorable films of ...

“For many forward-thinking people, the age of the white male was already over,” reflects curator Diego Cortez in Sara Driver’s documentary Boom for Real: The Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat. With that Cortez, who co-founded TriBeCa’s iconic Mudd Club, sums up the Downtown New York scene of the late 70s and early 80s.
Context is king in this portrait of the artist as young man. Like James Joyce’s Künstlerroman of Stephen Dedalus, ...
Working Title Film Festival was born in Vicenza (Italy) in 2016 to give space to the best of the independent audiovisual production showing the world of work and the several topics connected to it, through original points of view and languages. The purpose is to offer visibility to not-mainstream audiovisual works and to emerging cinema, building a network between independent filmmakers and audience. The festival wants to bring a contemporary point of view on the new job’s models and conditions, highlighting not only the negative aspects, bond to precariousness, fragmentation and rights’ decrease, but also the creative opportunities.

“Our children are our biographers,” goes the saying, and in Rebecca Miller’s (Personal Velocity, Maggie’s Plan) documentary about her playwright father Arthur, she takes it to heart. The result, Arthur Miller: Writer, leaves just-the-facts inventorying to a more impartial observer and gets up-close and personal with dad.
Thanks to Rebecca’s filmed interviews, we gain a seat at the family table with this icon of the American stage. Early on she lets...

When THE LOST CITY OF CECIL B. DEMILLE screens at The Egyptian Theatre Sept. 23, and the documentary’s full 30 years of footage finally gets a proper showing, it will be in the mythical city of its origin, Hollywood. Scroll back in time to 1923, the Great Director DeMille stands in blowing sand, turning back the hands of time to a Biblical Age when “The Ten Commandments” made for cinematic chaff. Pardon the “outdoor voice&r...

Taiwan International Children’s Film Festival (TICFF) was founded by Public Television Service (PTS, Taiwan) in 2004. Held biennially, it is the first film and television festival in Asia dedicated to viewers aged 12 and under. The 8th edition is scheduled for April 2018 in Taipei.
TICFF’s mission is to encourage quality children’s programming worldwide and to engage young local viewers with valuable access to the media. In 2016, TICFF attracted close to 15,000 audience to the screening during the one-week event.
In addition to bringing in and showing outstanding dramas, documentaries, animations and television programs, the Festival also includes an international competition with generous prizes that attracts the best works in children’s viewing to participate.
In addition, a key part of the Festival is the “Kids as Directors” section, which focuses on works in which young filmmakers have had a key role in production. This category gives young people a chance to display their creativity and serves as another way to bring children closer to the world of film and video.
PTS has striven since its founding in 1998 to serve the people of Taiwan with the finest in television viewing for viewers of all ages. PTS has also taken on the heavy responsibility of organizing and carrying out TICFF in order to give children in Taiwan a chance to view the world from a better vantage point. Hopefully the works shown in this Festival will introduce young viewers to other cultures and other perspectives and help to broaden the horizons of all who come to the events.

“Everyone knows about his pajamas, his lifestyle, his art, his movies, but not many people know about his sensitivity and vulnerability,” Italian director Pappi Corsicato recently told me. As you may have guessed, unless you’ve missed four decades of art world chatter, the public persona he was referencing is the painter and filmmaker Julian Schnabel. Corsicato’s aperçu followed our query about the title of his new documentary, “Julian Schnabel: A Private P...
A festival that is focused on pushing the boundaries of animation. The programme is 'filling the void' - bringing attention to the unused potential of the technique. Films are retrospective as well as premiering, and from any country.
VOID is screening films, inviting directors, and staging masterclasses and events. We are a competitive festival, giving out several short film awards.
We are looking forward to welcoming you as a guest or contributor, and once again share the stories that are brought to life only in animation!
“Who is the Shadowman?” asked 80s headlines about the black, phantom-like figures haunting the New York landscape. Now along comes an impressive answer in the documentary Shadowman, about their creator. Given that he is the elusive street art pioneer Richard Hambleton, mysteries still abound after the closing credits. But that’s much to the film’s credit. A beguiling portrait of the artist and his era, it leaves us raring to fathom more.
Some eight years in...
