Interview With Ido Mizrahy, Director of THINGS THAT HANG FROM TREES

Saturday, June 10----An Israeli director for a Southern Gothic story set in 1960s Florida may seem like an odd choice, but for Ido Mizrahy, the director of the American Independent film THINGS THAT HANG FROM TREES, his foreigness allowed him to bring subtle observations to this story of small town life. The film, which is screening in the American Independents Competition here, is written and based on the autobiographical novella of Aaron Louis Tordini. Tordini grew up in St. Augustine, Florid...

When the Cannes International Film Festival 2006 opens on 17 May, this will mark a particularly successful year for Europe’s film industry. Seventeen European films, which all received funding under the EU’s MEDIA programme, have made it into the final selection. The future of the MEDIA programme, the development of business models for Film Online services and the competitiveness of European films abroad will be on the agenda when the EU’s Ministers for Culture and Audiovisual meet with C...

"Punk's Not Dead"

Yesterday afternoon I was lucky enough to be handed an invitation to the final screening of the documentary, "Punk's Not Dead," directed by Susan Dynner, showing in a small viewing room at the Grey d'Albion Hotel around the corner from the Palais des Festivals. Somewhat reminiscent of vh1's 3Behind the Music" shows, the film was well paced, informative, humurous, and of course had an awesome soundtrack. Starting with the roots of Punk Rock in the late 70's/early 80's, they analyze the history of...

Cannes Meeting of Europa Cinemas exhibitors

In the context of falling cinema attendance, exhibitors belonging to the Europa Cinemas network succeeded in increasing the proportion of European films on their screens. In 2005, almost 60% of screenings were reserved for European films. Progress was apparent above all in the proportion of European films distributed outside their country of origin, which increased from 34 to 37%. It was therefore diversity which gained ground in this network, and this did not concern the European continent alone...

The accreditation

Everybody that get in the Palais of the Festival of Cannes have one around their neck. A Badge! But how can they get one? You have to have a good reason to get one. For example, if you are a producer, if you work in the movie market or if you are an apprentice etc ... So this morning i have been to the accreditation space where they deliver badges. It opens at 9 am until 8 pm. People who come to get a badge have to fill a paper to give few information about their identity. The employee enters t...

Me on the tapis rouge

The Long Wait to see the Stars!

As each day rolls on I notice just how early people arrive at the red carpet for each premiere. The Da Vinci Code premiere started filling up around 2:00pm when the "stars" weren't even scheduled to arrive until 6:30-7:00pm. And I have to admit, I was right there in the mix with them. There's something about the energy in the air at a premiere. Everyone is excited to see their favorite celebrities in person...even if it is only a fleeting glance. They say Hollywood is magic...and I believe it no...

Cannes Hits Its Stride

Cannes was in full swing Friday with the regulars – old ladies and their dogs – having all but disappeared, and swarms of tourists and film types taking their place for the twelve-day event. Police were everywhere, as were the blue-suited men and women on hand to check badges and manage the herds of people streaming in and out of festival center, The Palais. Regular sunbathers were relegated to the far end of the beach with lines of pristine tents, housing private clubs, taking up much of th...

Festival News Friday, 19 May 2006

Premiers Volver staring Penelope Cruz as well as Fast Food Nation directed by Richard Linklater premier tonight in the Palais du Festival. The Da Vinci Code Opens Worldwide Since its premier on Wednesday, The Da Vinci Code has not received great reviews from critics. Today is its global debut. Despite its bad critical reviews, there is no doubt that the box office sales will hit a record high. It has been reported that The Da Vinci Code is responsible for selling over 81% in its advanced ti...

The Sacred Feminine?

The critics may have not liked "The Da Vinci Code" but surely they have been able to handle complex material before. At least that is what they claim was the problem. After all, Fibonnaci numbers are only used to access a Swiss bank account.Todd McCarthy at Variety wrote a scanty review of little insight. Problem with pic is not the information but the potboiler approach by helmer Ron Howard. Second, there is NO chemistry between Hanks and Tatou. You can feel her warmth but Hanks is somewhere e...

The Da Vinci Code Pyramid

The Arrival! The Actors Come and the Festival Begins

Wednesday was the first official day of the festival, but to a few select few it really started on Tuesday. Tuesday was the arrival of the Da Vinci Code Key Players: Dan Brown, Ron Howard, Paul Bettany (who also starred in Wimbledon...a quality piece of romantic comedy with a superb soundtrack in my opinion), Ian McKellen, Audrey Tautou, and Tom name a few. Unfortuantely, Hanks likes his privacy, so I only got a really good picture of the reflective window in his car. They arrived ...

The Da Vinci Code: much (controversy) ado about very little...

"The Da Vinci Code": A film which, finally, the Church has little to be concerned about.Much ado about very little... Many Christians from different backgrounds and sensibilities were anxious about the release of the film of The Da Vinci Code, directed by Ron Howard. However, far from being a cinema masterpiece, the film is simply a popular entertainment. While the early scenes set us on an exciting treasure hunt, the wordiness of the drawn out twists of the later part of the film will disappoin...
