At the risk of seeming self indulgent, this post is going to track my last two days in hopes of making a couple of points.
After screening 8: The Mormon Proposition, I was seething with such anger that had I run into a Mormon at that moment, I would have given ‘em a good slap in the back of the head. But I’ll come back to this in a minute.

purgatory / noun / an intermediate place or state of temporary suffering for expiatory purification
Within the word “purgatory”, it is easy to envision condemned souls, torment and darkness. However, purgatory may also reflect the cyclic state in which we often rediscover or recreate ourselves anew from within our personal inflictions. Sometimes it is the necessary stage to exorcise ourselves from the haunting ghosts of the past. Perhaps it is the serene place of self reflection and realization.
From within this, the producers of the DAMNED exhibition of fine dark art present a new exhibition of cinema and theatre called Purgatory. Held near halfway to DAMNED and Devil’s Night on May 20-22 2010 in Detroit, Purgatory will present approximately 30 short films of deeply introspective, beautifully disturbing and darkly enlightening subject matters from filmmakers worldwide. This is not an industry-focused horror film festival, but a tributary showcase of the often redemptive films from the filmmaker’s personal damnations complimented with live experimental performance art on stage during intermissions.

Lourdes (Dir Jessica Hausner 2009 Austria)
Jessica Hausner's new film Lourdes may be the most mysterious film screened at this year's Tallinn film festival, one that takes a story of religious and spiritual import and casts that world and those themes down a gauntlet that suggests Hitchcock and Tati in its supremely calibrated conceptual suspense and encircling humor. The story finds a wheelchair-bound Sylvie Testud, whose character is suffering from multiple-sclerosis, traveling...

This is the official trailer for our documentary "Last Supper for Malthus".
Director: David Moolten.
Once a child laborer who trekked from Mexico to the fields of California to pick strawberries, Jose Hernandez recently traveled into space as an astronaut on the Discovery space shuttle. His story honors both the desperate struggle of immigrants and the greatness of which they are capable. This film and spoken word performance are a tribute.

In 1822, eight men escape from the most isolated and brutal prison on
earth, Sarah Island in Van Diemens Land. Only one man survives, and
his tale of betrayal, murder and cannibalism shocks the British
establishment to the core. This story is the last confession of
Alexander Pearce.
In San Sebastian, the Kursal, the buzzing center of the festival, lights up the entrance to Gros and the beach.
