I wrote yesterday about 2 films receiving a lot of buzz, then felt a little worried they wouldn't meet up to my high expectations... too often the case when you hear about the best of the fest.
SO- it was such a relief to emerge from the LA Film Festival cinemas yesterday and say yes, those films deserved all that buzzing.
'Where Are You Taking Me' took me to Uganda with a sincere observational eye that simply lets the magical moments unfold before you, untouched except by Kimi Takesue's exquisite framing that transforms ordinary scenes into art.
´The Two Escobars´ took on a much more conventional style, with a constant soundtrack racing through the film like a heartbeat. But with such an action packed story of the deadly intersection between drug trafficking and soccer in Colombia, featuring interviews with the families of murdered drug lord Pablo Escobar and soccer star Andres Escobar, the film didn't miss a beat. A compelling profile of Colombia that will make you never watch the World Cup in the same way again.
Can't way for the ´Conversations with Ben Affleck' tonight. With hundreds of teenage girls lining up already outside the festival for the Twilight premiere on Thursday night, it could be a more exciting event than anyone anticipated!
