Throwing an international film festival can be a time consuming task, but well worth the effort. The Montezuma International Film Festival is a great example.
Festival League, the event organizer, is a group of filmmakers, musicians and other artists from the US who work non-stop to produce this five day festival of independent film with a splash of live music, art and parties all day and night in Montezuma, Costa Rica. Although it seems as if throwing an event in another country would be nearly impossible, the group that puts the MIFF on seems to be quite happy with the results so far.
Festival Director, Eric Panter says, "Montezuma Film Fest finds itself in constant contact with companies, organizations, and groups in Costa Rica who are willing to help create this first annual event. Although we throw a series of festivals in the US, (Atlanta Underground Film Festival, DocuFest, Animation Attack! and the Atlanta Horror Fest) we actually find it easier to work with Costa Rica to bring the Montezuma Film Festival. Costa Rica's main source of income as an entire country if their tourism industry, so a large scale film festival there makes perfect sense."
Panter adds, "Costa Rica is such a perfect fit, in fact, plans are already in the works for another festival in late 2008 or early 2009. The Costa Rica International Film Festival will be a traveling film festival that takes place in a different town in Costa Rica every year. We'll start it off in Tamarindo, and make our way down the entire country!"
