LA FABRIQUE CINEMA 2020 ONLINE UNTIL 26 JUNE PROGRAMME AND HIGHLIGHTS
Confronted with the global health crisis, the Institut français and its partners (France Médias Monde, the SACEM (French society of authors, composers and publishers of music), the International Organisation of La Francophonie and with the support of Orange Studio) have rolled out exceptional measures to support artists and all culture industry professionals in France and elsewhere.
That is why, by mutual agreement, they also decided to uphold La Fabrique Cinéma so that the emerging filmmakers taking part in the 2020 edition don’t lose out on the programme’s benefits, and can continue to be supported, while taking into account that each participant is undoubtedly going through a difficult and strange time.
As part of the Festival de Cannes Marché du Film Virtuel, which will take place from 22 to 26 June 2020, the Institut français and its partners will also open a virtual Cinémas du Monde Pavilion to highlight the programmes that support world cinema and emerging film industries and present the projects of La Fabrique Cinéma’s participants.
La Fabrique Cinéma becomes the e-Fabrique
The 17 participants of La Fabrique Cinéma have been taking part in online working group sessions since the beginning of May, made possible by the increased efforts of the Fabrique teams. This means they can benefit from the majority of the programme, which has been converted into a digital format. The first work sessions enabled the participants from around the world to meet virtually and become familiar with the programme. They were provided with tools to help with co-production and international sales.
At the end of the programme, during the Festival de Cannes Marché du Film Virtuel, the participants will be able to meet potential partners, coproducers and sales agents individually.
The transformation of La Fabrique’s programme into a virtual programme was made possible thanks to the valued support of numerous professionals and loyal partners such as EAVE, SODEC, Cinéfondation, the Marché du Film’s Cannes Docs and Producers Network, the CNC, the Semaine de la Critique (Critics’ Week), the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs (Directors’ Fortnight) and ACID.
Two Master Classes
This year, Rachid Bouchareb has accepted the invitation from the Institut français to act as patron for the Fabrique Cinéma 2020, and has continued to be involved in the programme by supporting the online format.
The projects will first be presented to him on 28 May, and the following day (29 May) Rachid Bouchareb will give a master class, hosted by RFI culture journalist Elizabeth Lequeret, with the support of the international radio station. Each of the participants will be given time to discuss their projects with him individually.
Rachid Bouchareb started out in the early 1980s with a series of short films, before directing his first feature film, Bâton Rouge, in 1985. Twelve feature films followed, with three receiving Oscar nominations for Best Foreign Language Film: Dust of Life in 1996, Days of Glory in 2006 and Outside the Law in 2010. Days of Glory and Outside the Law were presented in the main competition of the Festival de Cannes, and the leading male roles in Days of Glory won the best actor award collectively. In 2009, actor Sotigui Kouyaté won the Golden Bear for best actor in the film London River at the Berlin International Film Festival. In 2011, Rachid Bouchareb directed the first film in his American trilogy, Just Like a Woman, which was followed by Two Men in Town (La Voie de l’Ennemi) in 2014 and Belleville Cop (Le Flic de Belleville) in 2018. He also directed two mini-series for television: Frères d’Armes and Champions de France, portraits of men and women, mainly from the French colonial empire, who fought for France (Frères d’Armes) or won sports trophies as French competitors (Champions de France).
In addition to his work as a director, Rachid Bouchareb has produced films by Bruno Dumont, Ziad Doueiri and Karim Dridi, alongside Jean Bréhat and Muriel Merlin in the production company 3B Productions.
Music, which plays an essential role in film, is central to the discussions yet again this year. The SACEM 2020 Master Class will be given by Béatrice Thiriet, a French composer who actively supports the protection of copyright.
As a member of the board of the European Film Academy, Béatrice Thiriet represents artists and composers in a number of professional associations, unions and the SACEM. Béatrice will host the class, which will focus on film music, composing for cinema, followed by a discussion on these topics with the Fabrique filmmakers.
Béatrice Thiriet entered the world of cinema with French filmmaker Pascale Ferran, composing the music for her films Petits Arrangements avec les morts, L’Âge des possibles, Lady Chatterley and Bird People. She has worked with many directors, in both film and television, such as Marc Esposito, Pierre Javaux Dominique Cabrera, Jacques Deschamps, Jérôme Diamant Berger and Xavier Durringer in France, and international artists such as Radu Miailheanu (Romania), Anup Singh (India), Arben Ivanaj (Albania), Eyal Sivan (Israel), Hu Jia (China) and Jesu Garai and Agusti Vilaronga (Catalonia, Spain).

The Master Classes are primarily aimed at the emerging filmmakers and producers of the Fabrique Cinéma. They will also be offered during a special event as part of the Festival de Cannes’ Marché du Film Virtuel.
The Fabrique Cinéma programme was developed by the Institut français in close collaboration with the Festival de Cannes, and in partnership with France Médias Monde, the Société des Auteurs, Compositeurs et Editeurs de Musique (SACEM) and the International Organisation of la Francophonie (IOF), with the support of Orange Studio.
Since 2009, the Fabrique Cinéma by the Institut français has supported 111 selected projects, 202 directors and producers from 63 countries, including 23 French-speaking countries.
