Cannes 2019 Jury President Alejandro González Iñárritu joined a packed house to cheer on Gael García Bernal at the world premiere of his film Chicuarotes. Bernal and his team were thrilled to introduce their film to the world at the Salle du Soixantième on Monday evening. Bernal was in very high spirits before the screening and took the time to introduce the film in French, which seemed to impress the French speakers in the crowd.

The standing ovation after the screening and the time Bernal took to shake hands and take photos with audience members was above and beyond what many other directors do. The young cast appeared pleased with their glorious world premiere. Although one might think that Chicuarotes started out very testosterone-fueled although with a certain degree of lightness it shifted gears a bit before the midway point. The ending could have taken a typical route but I was pleasantly surprised to see that was not the case. For the few people I saw who left early I think that they really missed out on a thought-provoking ending.
