Nina Wu is an interesting film that hits a hard punch, and it's clear that Midi Z has enjoyed his share of Quentin Tarantino films in addition to other filmmaking greats. It made its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section today. It's no surprise to this film journalist that QT showed up for this screening. This is the kind of film that one might think Tarantino would appreciate, at times it even felt a little similar to some of his work but with more of a realistic female point of view. While there were a few walkouts that I noticed they seemed to be some critics from the older generation. Midi Z is quite a talented filmmaker and at a few moments I felt like Gaspar Noe popped into my head. What a shame that he told the audience before the screening that it was hard to get funding for his film in part because it is a female-centric story. I'm definitely still thinking about this film, especially some specific shocking scenes.
