Sam de Jong's authentic NYC-based film Goldie made its world premiere tonight at the Haus der Kulturen to a sold out audience. This film has attitude, there's no denying that. There were even people waiting outside the theater, hoping to score some last-minute tickets. In the row behidn me I could even occasionally hear a German father translating the dialogue for his teenage daughter. That's no simple task. The audience was a mixed bag of Germans and English speakers, with ages ranging from young teens up to grandma and grandpas. The audience was in for a treat because director/writer Sam de Jong took to the stage after the screening to answer some insightful questions that audience members had. De Jong sent his regard from Slick Woods (whose Goldie really carries the film in the palm of her hands) who wasn't able to attend the premiere because she is busy walking the catwalk at New York Fashion Week. It's a shame that NYFW runs at the same time as Berlinale.
