Meet our friend from South Africa: Zolani Mkiva an internationally acclaimed heritage practitioner and cultural activist, a poet, actor and producer, known for Mandela: Un long chemin vers la liberté (2013), A Small Town Called Descent (2010) and Cultures of Resistance (2010).
He is the founder of The Mkiva Humanitarian Award and flew from South Africa to honor Emir Kusturica during the Award Ceremony, closing night of the 12th Kustendorf Film and Music Festival.
Zolani Mkiva earned national fame when he acted as imbongi at the celebration of Nelson Mandela’s release from jail. In 1991 he was appointed Imbongi Yesiwe, i.e. Poet of the Nation. In 1994 television viewers around the world watched his impressive performance at Mandela’s inauguration as President of the Republic.
