Out of Competition Films do not get nearly the same amount of attention as other films in The Festival. Bulhandang (The Merciless) by Byun Sung-Hyun shows that this, perhaps, should not always be the case. Greeted by a thin red carpet turnout, the four main actors were greated with a thunderous applause in the Grand Théâtre Lumière. The audience appeared to be extremely excited about the film as an applause broke out with every production company that appeared on screen.
The film continued to keep the audience on the edge of their seat as the undercover Korean cop moves up in the ranks of an intense prison an wins the heart of a long time gang member. His alliances are continuously questioned as the story continues to be revealed, with a new twist just about every scene. The official synopsis is below.
