Canadian premiere - The 5th edition of the International Uranium Film Festival will be held in Quebec City from April 15 to 25, 2015
The International Uranium Film Festival will be held in Quebec City this year from April 15 to 25. Over 50 films about the nuclear age will be screened throughout the ten-day festival at the Concorde Hotel on Grande Allée. Opening night festivities on April 15 promise to be vibrant, with a spectacular circus performance, surprise cocktails and various uranium-related events.
This festival – which has previously been held in Washington, New York, Berlin, Munich, Lisbon and Mumbai – is a first in Canada since it was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 2010. This special edition marks the 70th anniversary of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the 29th anniversary of the tragedy at Chernobyl and the 4thanniversary of the Fukushima disaster.
"I am proud that this year's Festival will be held in Canada, one of the largest uranium producers in the world," said Norbert G. Suchanek, founder and director of the Festival. "I would especially like to thank the Grand Council of the Crees for making this special event possible."
The Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Istchee) is the event's principal host. For a number of years, the Cree Nation has been vocal in its opposition to uranium exploration in Eeyou Istchee, their territory in Northern Quebec. The Cree Nation will present, for the first time in Quebec, a short film on the subject, entitled The Wolverine: The Fight of the James Bay Cree. The Cree Nation also launched the "StandAgainstUranium" social media campaign last year.
After the festival in Quebec the International Uranium Film Festival continues in Brazil. July 9 - 19 it will be held in Rio de Janeiro's Modern Art Museum (Cinemateque), in September in Berlin and October 5 - 7 the festival will be guest in Florianopolis.
