The animago Award in Karlsruhe and the Porsche Award in Ludwigsburg:
Students of animation from the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg recognized for outstanding work
”Best Character” – ”Best Technical Implementation” – ”Best Visualization” – 3 of this year's eleven animago trophies were handed to students from the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg. Heiko von der Scherm, Onni Pohl and Thilo Ewers were honored at the animago AWARDs 2008 awards ceremony on November 12 within the ”digital creation days”.
Heiko von der Scherm was honored for the ”Best Character” in his film ”Descendants”, which follows two diametrically opposed flowers. One is old and bitter, the other young, vital and naïve. A visitor throws their routine life out of balance.
Onni Pohl's film ”Frequency Morphogenesis” made its way to the top of the category ”Best Technical Implementation”. In cooperation with technical director student Sebastian Schmidt, she brought musical life into water as vibrations grow and evolve form a single drop to a universe of diversity.
Thilo Ewers' social spot ”They will come to town” won one of the most coveted awards. The jury was moved to reward the film's apocalyptic vision with first place in the category ”Best Visualization”. In it, New York is an underwater ghost town visited by oceanic wildlife.
And the good news continues: only a day later, ”They will come to town” took 2nd place at the Porsche Award in Ludwigsburg. An international jury voted not only for the concept, but the perfectionist quality of the film's visuals. ”Thoroughly remarkable, however, is the perfection of the film's post- production, that highlights even the finest detail with careful attention”. The jury continues: ”When we first saw the film we assumed the post-production had been done by a professional company. We had a hard time accepting that it had been done by two students at their computers”. First place went to Mario Zozin, another Filmakademie student, for his spot ”Pure Performance”. With the assistance of students from the Institute of Animation, he portrayed athletes in the midst of their greatest achievements, without their sports equipment, which were digitally removed postum.
The animago Award is one of the most prominent 2D/3D competitions within German-speaking countries and has a 12-year history. Short and full-feature films can be entered; categories include advertising, architecture and logo animation. A jury of specialists hands out numerous prizes in 10 categories, and the ”audience award” is determined by the audience itself.
The PORSCHE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ADVERTISING FILM AWARD – or, the Porsche Award – is organized by the Filmakademie Baden- Wuerttemberg and supported by the Ferdinand Porsche AG as main sponsor. It’s the first competition for advertising films exclusively dedicated to students the world over. The three winners were awarded prizes of € 3,911, € 2,911 and € 1,911 respectively – sums alluding to the Stuttgart sports car manufacterer's successful model series. In addition, winners receive flight coupons from the co-sponsor Germanwings.
