Venice 66th Film Festival - Characterisation - The Prince of Tears - Yonfan and cast/crew of Prince of Tears. 4th September 2009

On CHARACTERISATION

“Drawing is important to express oneself

It doesn’t have to be real nor unreal

Drawing is to express our thinking

Employing his imagination, liberating art

To liberate our thoughts on paper and bycolours”

Master Qiu(scene 1, Prince of Tears)

Yonfan, director of Prince of Tears, shows us as in classic Chinese painting, there is a form LIU BAI that is to leave some whitespace on the paper, or silk for the viewer to imagine. This space can beanything in your thoughts but combined with the rest of the image, forms apainting of your own, a film of your own. Yonfan guides you through Princeof tears with a picture storybook created by the art departmentto communicate his vision in the film, drawing the emotions and memories of hischildhood in a character and prop to bring us back to early things that arelyrical with high ideals… childhood… and storytelling.
