Quendrith JohnsonQuendrith Johnson is filmfestivals.com Los Angeles Correspondent covering everything happening in film in Hollywood... Well, the most interesting things, anyway. DALE DICKEY Winter's Bone Beats NAOMI WATTS, JAMES FRANCO & NATALIE PORTMAN triumph at Spirit Awards & MoreBy Quendrith Johnson, Los Angeles Correspondent Braving the Santa Monica cold front, Spirit Award nominee Jesse Eisenberg of THE SOCIAL NETWORK just strolled by the press tent at the show with his handlers. Natalie Portman, pregnant and radiant in a yellow lace short sleeve gown, just mentioned there was no medic on the BLACK SWAN set. Her presence in advance of the Oscars tomorrow night is an act of bravery, considering the cold wind and stress level. Mark Ruffalo mentioned his favorite charity-of-the-moment www.waterdefense.org, which promotes clean water in America. Ben Stiller showed up in support of GREENBERG. Rosario Dawson is making her appearance this year.Jamie Foxx just showed up, as did Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman in a red hot dress, despite her gig presenting at the Oscars tomorrow.Samuel L. Jackson is also here. James Franco, Oscar host, was asked "what are doing tomorrow, do you want to hang out?" Danny Boyle (127 HOURS) was at Franco's table. Annette Bening, spectacles and black jacket, was in the mood for fun. Aaron Eckhart, who has shaved his head to a military length, was in force. The 2011 Winners So Far: Matt Libatique, DP for BLACK SWAN was the first award winner of the day. Vera Farmiga and Mark Ruffalo presented the winner for Best Supporting Actress together, to Dale Dickey (WINTER'S BONE). Husband and wife Naomi Watts and Leiv Schreiber, looked on. Watts was nominated in the same category. GET LOW won for Best First Feature, presented by Will Arnett and David Cross. James Franco introduced 127 HOURS. Jeremy Renner and Nicole Kidman were the team for Best Male Lead James Franco, naturally. (The Oscar host better not party tonight, ps.) Best Foreign film was no surprise, THE KING'S SPEECH. Tom Hooper said "people were not lining up to support a film like this.... The Queen was reported to have seen it and been amused... The MPAA said if they dropped the audio of the (f word) out, they would give us a PG-13 rating." And, as far as the Oscars, "I think anyone would be not in their right mind if they were not nervous about making a speech in front of half a billion people." The Robert Altman Award went to director Nicole Holofcener for PLEASE GIVE. Amanda Peet showed up in support of Nicole and accepted the award with her. Rainn Wilson named John Hawkes in WINTER'S BONE as Best Supporting Actor. Ben Stiller said "last year I was made Honorary Chair of the Spirit Awards, this year they abolished that position, and now they are asking me to step down... I will not step down... we will turn Hollywood into a red raging fist of fire!" Stiller added,"Darren Aronofsky asked me to lie and say his name if it wasn't him. Darren Aronofsky." As he slipped on stage BLACK SWAN's winning director, Aronofsky said "this was a really hard film to make... I will always be in debt to Miss Natalie Portman." Nataie Portman wins Best Actress, presented by Jamie Foxx and Zoe Saldana; "the actresses here are so inspirational... (and) just to be among all of these female filmmakers... to recognize these people in an industry with a different set of standards... thank you." BLACK SWAN took home Best Picture, beating out WINTER'S BONE, 127 HOURS, GREENBERG, and THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. # # # 26.02.2011 | Quendrith Johnson's blog Cat. : IFC Spirit Awards PEOPLE
