As International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam puts finishing touches on its 20th edition, set to launch November 22-December 2, festival director Ally Derks takes a moment to muse on this year’s standout themes, the joys of playing with a three-million-euro budget and the merry mischief of hiding a fake film for audiences to smoke out. Filmfestivals.com reached her in Amsterdam during the calm before the storm. FF: Is it a challenge to program a documentary festival that comes a week af...

Chaim Pevner, Film CriticFILM NOTES TO THE BARBICAN YIDDISH FILM RETROSPECTIVE(London, October 12-24, 1996) THE YIDDISH language cinema is nearly unique among world cinema cultures in that it had no specific homeland. Yiddish films, including “silent Yiddish” films, were produced wherever there were major Yiddish speech communities and a Yiddish theatrical circuit from which talent could be recruited. The majority of Yiddish language films were therefore made in New York or in P...
Monday, August 13------Films with a Holocaust theme remain a bottomless pit of fascination for those who still attempt to comprehend the immensity of the tragedy nearly 70 years after the fact. As with any human experience, the power of an individual story is infinitely more moving, fascinating and haunting than the repetition of numbers (in this case, a staggering six million) that the mind can simply not comprehend. A worthy addition to the canon of Holocaust films is the new documentary, PR...

Documentary features are beginning to come into their own, not only on the festival circuit but in selected commercial cinemas as well, as more and more perceptive moviegoers, tired of paying ten dollars a shot for mainstream mindlessness, are beginning to look for films that actually have something to say. Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" was a real ground-breaker when it was awarded the top prize at Cannes two years ago, the first time a documentary film was so recognized at this topper of al...

Import Export, presented in Competition, marks the return of the Austrian director Ulrich Seidl to Cannes, five years after having presented his startling Dog Days. His new film tells the story of two characters on opposite tracks: a young Ukrainian nurse who goes to Austria to find employment, and a young Austrian man who settles in Ukraine, also to earn a livelihood. Shot in extreme conditions, at temperatures of 20°F below zero, Import Export features the work of two amateur actors, Ekateryb...
Tuesday, May 1-----For those of you who only know Paul Mazursky as Larry David's nemesis on the HBO series CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM, let me tell you....you are missing a lot. For audiences who came of age in the 1970s and 1980s, Mazursky was one of the important filmmakers of his time. Falling somewhere between Woody Allen's self-conscious angst and Mel Brooks' baudy burlesques, the best of Mazursky combined deep emotional drama with soaring comedic heights, to produce films that were ...

Viewed on video, at J.M's Seattle, Wed. nite, March 7, 2007. This one of the great classics of the pre-war Yiddish cinema and one of the great all time films on the subject of immigration to America. It was the culmination of Joseph Green's amazing four film cycle of Yiddish films made between 1937 (Yidl Mitn Fidl) and 1939, on the brink of WW II. This saga of a Jewish family opens in 1912 in Lubin, a little shtetl in the Ukraine and terminates in America -- New York -- in the twent...
