Eurasia Competition at Tallinn FF

user
ENTER THE VOID (Gaspar Noe, France)  The main event here at POFF, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, which is entering its final weekend, is the Eurasia International Competition, a mix of 21 films hailing from Europe and Asia. The films on view have been acclaimed at other film festivals on the circuit and are making their Eastern European or Baltic Premieres at the event. As a whole, this is an astonishing survey of current trends in world cinema. European titles ...

North American Indies At Tallinn FF

user
DON'T LET ME DROWN (Cruz Angeles, USA)  While covering the events and atmosphere here in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, for POFF, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, I should come clean and let readers know that I have been hired by the Festival to bring quality American and Canadian films to the event this year. In all, a record 25 films from North America will be showcased in Tallinn this year. Here is the copy written by me as an introduction to the 10-film NORT...

Football Documentary Premieres In Tallinn

user
One of the buzz titles here at POFF, the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, is a football (European style) documentary with the enticing title of KILL THE REFEREE (Les Arbitres). The Belgian production focuses not only the overpaid players or their obsessive, sometimes violent fans, but on the referees who have the unenviable job of calling plays and declaring fouls.  KILL THE REFEREE unveils the lives of several professional football referees at the Euro 2008 championship; am...

BALTIC EVENT is the largest regional film market, bringing together film distributors, financiers, film festival reps and other professionals to meet the Baltic film industry. Comprised of seminar pane...

All Eyes Turn To Tallinn

user
In the year-round film festival circuit, a roundelay of more than 2000 individual film events held in almost every corner of the globe, one moves as if part of a gypsy caravan, lingering in one place before taking up stakes for the next location. For me, it is a lateral move across Europe from Amsterdam, where I have been attending the IDFA International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, and the host of the 13th annual POFF, Tallinn Black Nights F...

Lourdes

user
Lourdes (Dir Jessica Hausner 2009 Austria) Jessica Hausner's new film Lourdes may be the most mysterious film screened at this year's Tallinn film festival, one that takes a story of religious and spiritual import and casts that world and those themes down a gauntlet that suggests Hitchcock and Tati in its supremely calibrated conceptual suspense and encircling humor.  The story finds a wheelchair-bound Sylvie Testud, whose character is suffering from multiple-sclerosis, traveling...

Summer is coming to Tallinn next week.....well not exactly the balmy weather of July and August, but a film that brings with it the sultriness of that special season. Awards Night At Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

user
HUNGER Sunday, December 7-------In what had to be one of the more unusual and visually artistic Awards Ceremonies I've ever attended, the 12th edition of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival came to a dramatic close last evening (although screenings continue through the day on Sunday). The ceremony, a multi-media show that included video, live music by an Estonian rock band and an avant-garde performance presentation involving the Festival's jurors, was greeted by the en...

Baltic Event Introduces New VOD Platforms

user
Saturday, December 6------One of the most interesting presentations held at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival's Baltic Event was the introduction of 4 new Video On Demand (VOD) services based in Europe and focusing on the alternative distribution of European cinema. The sessions focused on the profiles of the services, what kind of content they currently feature and plan to add in the coming months and how their business plans work vis a vis independent producers.   Modera...

Focus On Turkey In Tallinn

user
Thursday, December 4------The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival is presenting a Focus On Turkey as one of its special highlights. Turkish cinema is as old as cinema itself. Over the years, Turkish cinema has been incredibly well received and diseminated, particularly in the Middle East and Europe, mixed with periods of artistic decline. Since the 1990s, a younger generation of film auteurs have found a receptive critical and audience response around the world, introducing such a...

Tallinn Black Nights FF EurAsia Competition

user
Saturday, November 29--------The main competition program at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, which began last night, is EurAsia, new films from the European and Asian continents. Estonia sits at a great divide between East and West, and has stood as a way-station between those two nexuses for the past thousand years. The Festival encourages a mutually supportive point of view that sees both the differences and connections between European and middle Asian culture. The Fes...

Awards for the POFF Animation Film Festival

user
Thursday, November 27--------On the eve of this year's Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival, which begins tomorrow evening, the Festival announced the winners of the POFF Animation Film Festival, which directly precedes the international film festival. Animation has been a staple of entertainment in Eastern Europe for the past 50 years. In many different ways, animators in Eastern Europe perfected a style of impressionistic reality, often using the satire of their subjects as jabs...

Introducing the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival

user
Thursday, November 27---------When I recently told family and friends that I was soon to attend a film festival in Tallinn, Estonia, a queer look came over their faces. This was really testing their geographic skills. Did they known that Estonia was its own kingdom for centuries before being part of the Russian empire. The photos I've seen show a civilization that has been around since the 14th century, with a prosperous port on the Baltic Sea. I don't arrive until Monday but I ...
