Santa Barbara

filmfestivals.com is covering live from Santa Barbara with pictures and videos.

SBIFF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts and education organization dedicated to making a positive impact utilizing the power of film. SBIFF is a year-round organization that is best known for its main film festival that takes place each year in February. Over the past 30 years the Santa Barbara International Film Festival has become one of the leading film festivals in the United States – attracting 90,000 attendees and offering 11days of 200+ films, tributes and symposiums. We bring the best of independent and international cinema to Santa Barbara, and we continue to expand our year-round operation to include a wide range of educational programming, fulfilling our mission to engage, enrich and inspire our community through film.

In June 2016, SBIFF entered a new era with the acquisition of the historic and beloved Riviera Theatre. The theatre is SBIFF’s new home and is the catalyst for our program expansion. This marks the first time that Santa Barbara has had a 24/7 community center focused on the art of film and is an incredible opportunity to expand our mission of educational outreach. Particularly important to SBIFF is making available high quality learning opportunities for underserved and vulnerable populations. Our programs and reach are more robust than ever before.

Opening night red carpet interviews from the 35th Santa Barbara International Film Festival opening

The 35th Annual Santa Barbara International Film Festival (SBIFF), presented by UGG, kicked off on Wednesday evening with the world premiere of A Bump Along The Way at the historic Arlington Theatre.

Directed by Shelly Love, the female-led comedy-drama centers around Pamela (Bronagh Gallagher), a middle-aged woman from Derry, Northern Ireland whose unexpected pregnancy after a one-night stand acts as the catalyst for her to finally take control of her life and become the role model her teenage daughter needs and craves.

Festivalgoers packed the house as Santa Barbara Mayor Cathy Murillo and SBIFF Executive Director Roger Durling welcomed guests and officially kicked off the festival with opening remarks.

“The original mission of the festival was to help the economic vitality of the city. Our emphasis has been about inclusion, about education, about inspiring,” said Durling. “We’re proud of this sense of community we’ve established - not only an immediate community, but an international community that gathers during this time of year to celebrate one thing we have in common - and it’s our love for cinema.”

Gallagher also took the stage to introduce the film and highlight the talented women behind it.

“We’re very much representing women in film in Ireland, “ said Gallagher, upon listing all of the key women who worked on the project to loud cheers and applause from the audience.

The evening concluded with a lively after party at State Street’s Paseo Nuevo where attendees got a real taste of Santa Barbara with sampling bites and cuisine from various local restaurants and establishments. Guests danced the night away while sipping on specialty cocktails from Belvedere.

SBIFF continues its commitment to education and the community throughout many free educational programs and events. In June 2016, SBIFF entered a new era with the acquisition of the historic and beloved Riviera Theatre. After a capital campaign and renovation, the theatre is now SBIFF’s new state-of-the-art, year-round home, showing new international and independent films every day. In May 2019, SBIFF opened its own Education Center in downtown Santa Barbara on State Street to serve as a home for its many educational programs and a place for creativity and learning.
