SBIFF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts and education organization dedicated to making a positive impact utilizing the power of film. SBIFF is a year-round organization that is best known for its main film festival that takes place each year in February. Over the past 30 years the Santa Barbara International Film Festival has become one of the leading film festivals in the United States – attracting 90,000 attendees and offering 11days of 200+ films, tributes and symposiums. We bring the best of independent and international cinema to Santa Barbara, and we continue to expand our year-round operation to include a wide range of educational programming, fulfilling our mission to engage, enrich and inspire our community through film.
In June 2016, SBIFF entered a new era with the acquisition of the historic and beloved Riviera Theatre. The theatre is SBIFF’s new home and is the catalyst for our program expansion. This marks the first time that Santa Barbara has had a 24/7 community center focused on the art of film and is an incredible opportunity to expand our mission of educational outreach. Particularly important to SBIFF is making available high quality learning opportunities for underserved and vulnerable populations. Our programs and reach are more robust than ever before. ![]() DOP Mike DeGruy dies during 27th SBIFF, his last words: “I can’t wait to tell you about this little adventure”During the 27th Santa Barbara Film Festival on the night of February 3rd, while I was celebrating my birthday, celebrated documentarian filmmaker and venerated cinematographer Mike DeGruy died in a helicopter crash in Australia. DOP of docs like DEEP BLUE (2003) and TV series like PLANET EARTH (2006), to name but a few, this talented and adventurous artist will be missed by all. The following statement is notice from Santa Barbara Press. written by Vanessa McMahon SBIFF PRESS "We have lost a valued member of our SBIFF family last night. Filmmaker, underwater cinematographer and adventurist Mike DeGruy died last night in a helicopter crash off the coast of Australia while scouting locations for an upcoming project. Mike, who curated the Reel Nature sidebar and was the force behind Field Trip to the Movies, had an incredible sense of adventure. He loved his work, he was full of life. He traveled the world and his passionate affection for all things outdoors was infectious and only eclipsed by his love and dedication to his wife, Mimi, and his children. And he loved sharing his passion with this festival. We’ve suffered a tremendous loss, but he would want us to forge ahead. He sent a message yesterday asking how everything was going and was so excited, saying “I can’t wait to tell you about this little adventure”…thank you, Mike, you’ve been an inspiration to us all."
