Palm Beach Opens With Italian THE GOLDEN DOOR
Monday, April 17-----The 12th Annual Palm Beach International Film Festival (PBIFF) kicks off on Thursday evening with the US Premiere of Italian director Emanuele Crialese’s NUOVOMONDO (THE GOLDEN DOOR). Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Vincenzo Amato, Aurora Quattrocchi and the late Vincent Schiavelli, THE GOLDEN DOOR is a modern fable that captures the spirit of the immigrant experience as one family sheds the comfort of the Old World for the opportunities of the New - a risk that carries no guarantee of success. The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before embarking, they they meet Lucy, a supposed British aristocrat who, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before arriving at Ellis Island. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island, their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers. The film had its world premiere at the 2006 Venice International Film Festival, winning the Silver Lion and the UNICEF Award. Director Crialese was also nominated as Best Director at the European Film Awards. Lead actor Vincenzo Amato will attend the opening festivities at Sunrise Cinemas in Mizner Park in swanky Boca Raton. The film begins an 8-day film feast that includes more than 120 films (features, documentaries and short films). The Festival, which runs from April 19 to 26 in various locations throughout Palm Beach County, is again headed by industry executive Randi Emerman. The film events will introduce 21 World Premieres and 9 US Premieres during its program, which features a host of exciting seminars, professional events and glamorous parties.
