Contexte Le film devait initialement être réalisé par Fritz Lang, qui aurait eu l’idée d’ajouter un prologue et un épilogue pour justifier l’irréalisme du décor et le choix de l’expressionnisme, mais, en train de tourner Les Araignées, il fut empêché de poursuivre le projet par les distributeurs qui avaient un besoin urgent du film.
