See Life from a different Lens with Brian De Palma in Masterclass in Venice

American Suspense master Brian De Palma at master class session at the Excelsior Hotel in Venice.  De Palma an Italo American is a festival favorite and is a frequent guest on the Lido.

By Alex Deleon

Sketch by Nesta Morgan

De Palma, 78, often regarded as the American successor to Hitchcock, is not only a filmmaker but a concerned observer of the world beyond cinema. Among his statements yesterday;

" In America we have an insane president.  In my films there is suspense but in today's world we have real reason to be in fear.  Godard was a big influence on me: Cinema is life seen from a different perspective.  The crucial problem today is climate change.  We must do everything we can to protect the environment but President Trump can't get this through his head and even denies that America has any responsibility or a role to play in this. It will be our children who will suffer the consequences".

His prominent films include mainstream box office hits such as Carrie (1976), Dressed to Kill (1980), Blowout, (1981), Scarface (The Al Pacino version, 1983), The Untouchables (1987), and Mission Impossible (1996).

The interview sponsored by Mastercard was entitled "See Life from a different Lens" and the director was partnered on stage by Italian actresses Valeria Golino and Nadine Labaki.
