As a young cinephile he quickly expressed the desire to become a film composer. His approach to the composition of soundtracks is based not only on his strong musicality, but also on his understanding of cinema, which allows him to truly communicate with directors. Desplat has often stated that he tries to create a vibration between the music and the image, to find a balance between function and fiction; he thinks of film music as another actor in the frame, interacting carefully with dialogue, sounds and camera movements.
Raised in a mixed musical and cultural environment, the son of a Greek mother and a French father who met at Berkeley university in California, he studied piano, trumpet and flute, and grew up listening to the French symphonists Ravel and Debussy, jazz, world music and movie soundtracks. While recording his first film, he met Dominique Solrey Lemonnier, the violinist who became his concertmaster, artistic director and wife. Dominique Solrey Lemonnier founded the Traffic Quintet for which Desplat writes original music and transcribes movie soundtracks. Under her musical guidance, writing for strings have become, as well as interpretation, key elements of his compositions. Alexandre Desplat has become a long-time partner of the London Symphony Orchestra and has composed for artists such as Renée Fleming, Alain Planès, Jean Yves Thibaudet, Vincent Ségal and Lang Lang. A six-time Oscar nominee, he has won many prizes, including a Golden Globe, three Césars, two European Film Awards and a Bafta. Alexandre Desplat has collaborated with directors such as Stephen Frears, Roman Polanski, Terrence Malick, Tom Hooper, Jacques Audiard, Kathryn Bigelow, David Fincher, George Clooney, Ang Lee, Ben Affleck, David Yates, Wes Anderson, and Matteo Garrone.
