46th International Film Festival Rotterdam
25 January - 5 February 2017

New and returning partner organisations from Kosovo, Macedonia, Chile, Kenya and USA

International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) will welcome
57 promising emerging film producers from 25 countries to the
17th edition of Rotterdam Lab. Rotterdam Lab is organised by IFFR’s co-production market CineMart in close collaboration with various partner organisations involved in the training of talented producers, as well as funding bodies.

The participants are nominated by the 30 CineMart partners. This year, Rotterdam Lab welcomes Kosovo Cinematography Center, Macedonian Film Agency, CinemaChile.
Returning: Tribeca Film Institute (USA) and One Fine Day Films (Kenya).

Rotterdam Lab is a five-day training workshop for emerging producers designed to provide the means to create and expand their international networks and boost their confidence and skills to navigate the world of international finance, sales and distribution and markets. Another important aim of Rotterdam Lab is to support its participants in running and adapting their companies within the rapidly changing media landscape.

The Rotterdam Lab programme includes round-table sessions with key experts, workshops on topics such as film marketing with Mathias Noschis (Alphapanda) and post-production, in collaboration with EP2C: Digital workflows in post-production with Niko Remus (post-production supervisor, Only Lovers Left Alive), Hans van Helden (VFX supervisor at Filmmore, Brimstone, Black Book) and Neeltje van der Heijden (post-production supervisor, Tonio). The programme will also include expert talks with Alex Boden (producer Sense8, UK producer Cloud Atlas) on producing TV series and Paul Miller (Escape Pictures) on film financing. A case study on I tempi felici verranno presto / Happy Times Will Come Soon, which was presented at CineMart 2014 and is screening in the Bright Future section at IFFR 2017, will give an up-close and personal insight into co-production and presenting your project at a market.

Rotterdam Lab has developed into a valuable tool for strengthening CineMart's international network of independent producers. By allowing producers to present their companies and projects, receive feedback on how to proceed and expand their networks in an effective way, Rotterdam Lab contributes to IFFR’s ambition of nurturing emerging talent. Other examples of IFFR’s talent development programmes are BoostNL and the IFFR Young Film Critic traineeship. BoostNL is a collaboration with Netherlands Film Festival’s coproduction market HFM, which maximises support for feature projects that have been presented at CineMart or supported by the Hubert Bals Fund, and for Dutch features currently in development. The IFFR Young Film Critic programme gives young critics the opportunity to follow a traineeship on film criticism, including masterclasses from professionals, during the festival. IFFR’s YFC traineeship was the first of its kind when it was established 19 years ago. An example since followed by festivals worldwide.
