International Cinematographers Film Festival Manaki Brothers

The name of the International Cinematographers’ Film Festival “MANAKI BROTHERS”, is in honor and inspired by the abundant cinematographic opus of the MANAKI brothers: Yanaki (1878-1954) and Milton (1880-1964), the two brothers who in 1905 brought the first film camera on the Balkan Peninsula. The festival has started in 1979 as an initiative of The Association of Film Professionals of Macedonia, the city of Bitola and the Cinematheque of Macedonia, Today the Festival is one of the most respectable places in the World, where the work of the Directors of photography are priced. Every year the best cinematographers across the worlde compete for the three main festival awards: The Golden, the Silver and the Bronze Camera 300. Every time, the festival is held, thousands admirers of the film art enjoy the best cinematic achievements of the past year. Besides in the movies, they are enjoying in the surrounding (environment) of many guest and stars known from the screen.

Hats off to the 40th edition of the International Cinematographers`Film Festival ”Manaki Brothers”

40. jubilee edition of the International Cinematographers` Film Festival ”Manaki Brothers” will take place 14-21 September 2019 in the picturesque city of Bitola, the Republic of North Macedonia.

Bitola was the city where the first cinematographers of the Balkans, the brothers Milton and Janaki Manaki started their creative documentation of the people and society they lived in.

They shot the first film in the Balkans in 1905 and they opened their own cinema to screen it for wider audience.

This first and the oldest International Cinematographers’ Film Festival, which bears their name, has welcomed the greatest cinematographers and film makers every year since 1979.

This unique film festival was founded by the Macedonian Film Professionals’ Association (MFPA), and the members of the association are still taking good care of the festival.


Among the Festival Laureates in different categories since 1991 are: Sven Nykvist, Freddie Francis, Vadim Jusof, Raoul Coutard,  Tonnino Delli Colli, John Seale, Anatolij Petricki, Miroslav Ondricek, Walter Carwalho, Tomislav Pinter, Peter Suszhitzky, Wilmosh Zsigmond, Dante Spinotti, Luchano Tovoli, Jose Luis Alcaine, Chris Menges, Ryszard Lenczewski, Jaromir Sofr, Phedon Papamichael, Victoria Abril, Jery Menzel, Anthony Dod Mantle, Roger Pratt, Daryl Hanna, Bruno Del Bonel, Juliettte Binoshe Christian Berger, Catherine Deneuve, Vittorio Storaro, Henry Alecan, Jerzy Vojcik, Miki Manojlovic,  Isabelle Huppert, Bruno Ganz, Pierre Lhomme, Robby Muller, Guiseppe Rotunno, Rodger Deakins, Claudia Cardinale.
