"GARY LUCAS PLAYS COFFIN JOE" A HIT AT SXSW FILM AND SXSW MUSIC FESTIVAL!!I had a great double header at SXSW over the weekend playing my original live solo guitar score to Jose Mojica Marins's 1967 Brazilian cult horror classic "Esta Noite Encarnerei no teu Cadaver" (This Night I Will Possess Your Corpse) at both the SXSW Film and the SXSW Music Festivals down in Austin Texas! Austin was a zoo as usual with over 2000 different acts performing. I had played there previously both solo acoustic http://garylucas.com/www/soloac
with my band Gods and Monsters (twice) http://garylucas.com/www/gods and twice accompanying films with my live guitar scores--Paul Wegener's 1920 "The Golem"--which received a standing ovation at the old Presbyterian Church a couple years ago http://garylucas.com/www/golem
and also the legendary 1931 Spanish "Dracula" last year also back at the church http://garylucas.com/www/dracula
This year the powers that be there thought to put me in both a real movie theater, the legendary Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on 6th Street for the Film Festival Special Event showing on Saturday March 17th at noon and again that evening at 11pm at The Hideout, an improv theater on Congress Ave. right around the corner Both shows were packed!! There was a buzz on it courtesy of the Austin Chronicle, twice: http://www.austinchronicle.com/music/2012-03-16/saturday-picks-and-sleep... http://www.austinchronicle.com/screens/2012-03-16/sxsw-film-whats-yours-is-mine/ and Tim League, the founder and major domo behind the fantastic Alamo Ritz Theater chain came down himself for my show at noon at his beautiful theater! He loved my score and the film and wrote me last night: "Hey Gary, It was an honor to meet you! I really enjoyed the show and the score. Great to see Marins on the screen again, it has been too long. " Here's a photo from my introduction before the film: and a photo from the performance itself: the next day I went to the famous Smitty's BBQ in Lockhart Texas to chow down on some ribs and stuff in the company of Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye and old friend Sandy Pearlman--and ran into Steve Dollar from the Wall Street Journal who had profiled me there last May http://on.wsj.com/lz0uef
