Since its establishment, Fajr International Film Festival has played a vital role in the development of the Iranian Cinema. Every year, veteran directors and new filmmakers devotedly present their works in the festival.

Over the years, Fajr has been honored by numerous great film figures who have also worked closely with the festival as respectable Jury Members, such as Volker Schlondorff, Krzysztof Zanussi, Robert Chartoff, Semih Kaplanoglu, Bruce Beresford, Percy Adlon, Paul Cox, Shyam Benegal, Bela Tarr, Jan Troell, Helma Sanders-Brahms, Elia Suleiman, Agnieszka Holland, Andrey Zvyagintsev, Rustam Ibragimbekov, just to name a few among other influential figures.

“Iran’s cinema is capable of having effects on region and world cinema"

Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Abbas Salehi paid a visit to the 36th Fajr International Film Festival on April 21 at Chaharsou Complex where he stated Iran's cinema has the potential to play effective role in the region and the world.

The full Interview comes as following:

1.    Would you tell us your general opinion about the 36th Edition of

Fajr Film festival and the local and international films which are being screened?

This festival is a good chance for Iran’s cinema in both cinematic and cultural area to show its real potentials to world. One of the main focuses of the festival is about market and buyers, which gives a great opportunity to our products to be shown around the world. Our cinema has an old history in creating great masterpieces but we have never shown our cinema's real potential in economic section, I mean the business of the cinema, so we aim to improve this section more and more. The presence of international guests, buyers, film and etc. will defiantly help us in reaching our goals in cinema's economic section.

Things I mentioned will lead us in cultural and cinematic exchanges with other countries. The festival will give the cinema the chance of showing its capacity and makes it more professional.

2.      As you know this year we are celebrating the 120th anniversary of

Iran’s cinema, what would you like to say about this?

This shows that the birth of Iran’s cinema was along with the birth of the world’s cinema .This shows the deepness and capability of Iran’s cinema, though we have gone through so many ups and down during the past 120 years, but today the result is marvelous. This powerful background will help in improvement of region’s cinema and even world’s cinema.

3.    The international desk of the festival started its journey almost a

month ago, what is your statement upon this? Does it have any effect on cultural diplomacy?

One the most effective and crucial sections of each festival is the international desk of it, because by them the face of the festival will be shown to the world. So we need a professional group to send our main massage to the world. And I think the group covering the festival news internationally are doing their gob pretty well.
