Some felt is was too small, too independent, too experimental, too slow, too
boring, too un-marketable, but none of this matters now, because as of last
night Gus Van Sant's cinematic meditation on friendship and survival, Gerry,
was acquired by ThinkFilm. They are hoping for a Fall 2002 release. ThinkFilm's
marketing of Gerry will surely be an interesting campaign to keep an
eye on later this year.

On September 23, 2001, several big names in show biz got together to write,
rehearse, and direct an ensemble of six plays. Exactly 24 hours later, the plays
were performed, with seats selling at $100 a ticket. Why the rush and the price?
All benefits from the performance went towards Working Playground, a non-profit
organization, to help children of New York deal with the trauma of September
11.
In ticket sales alone, the benefit raised over $30,000. In the sold-out audienc...
This year's People's Choice Awards echoed much of last year's winners. While

Choice Awards in past years. Other repeat favorites include Jennifer Aniston
as Favorite Female Television Performer and Garth Brooks as Favorite Male Musical
Performer. Shrek took top pick for Favorite Motion Picture and Tom Hank...

The American labor union is currently at a crossroads, a position that director
Kristi Jacobson captures with commitment and clarity in her first feature length
documentary, American Standoff. Produced by Oscar-winning filmmaker Barbara
Kopple (with whom Jacobson co-directed a short film about capital punishment),
and headed for an HBO airing later this year, the film follows, from its inception,
a lengthy Teamsters strike against Overnite Transportation, a powerful national,...
Breaking out on the festival buying circuit this year is Fine Line Features,
which bought the North American rights to Finn Taylor's dramatic competition

Likewise, Gus Van Sant's film, Gerry, was taken by THINKFilm for under
$1 million, with a release planned for next fall. The film received mixed reviews

Finally, the snow flurries blew into Park City giving the town the kind of
white powder that pleased skiers as well as filmgoers who might feel a greater
sense of coziness during a matinee. Jill Sprecher’s Thirteen Conversations
About One Thing, being one well received option, but a fair number of people
checked out the House of Docs, a sprawling but comfy clubhouse for documentary
makers who are making quite a presence with their films this year.

The Jubilee needs your help to keep bringing you the films and filmmakers you
would never get to see or meet without us. This may not be the best timing for
a plea for dollars due to holiday bills, a crashing economy with an uncertain
future, and the multitude of great causes and human needs that are worthy of
financial support. Too often arts and culture take a hit when times are tough,
but this is when we need the arts the most.
The arts reflect our times, our culture, ou...
A unique cooperation has saved one of the most valuable cinemas in Europe,
the Skandia, located in the very heart of Stockholm, closed to the public since
1995. Beside the Stockholm International Film Festival and Svensk Filmindustri
other partners in the venture are the Swedish Film Institute, the Stockholm
City Council and Hufvudstaden.
Skandia was opened in 1923 by Svensk Filmindustri. Skandia is considered as
one of the great masterpieces of Swedish 20's classicism. It w...
Located in the media capital of the world, having produced countless events
for 12 years in Hollywood and New York City, we know filmmakers, screenwriters
and actors need MEDIA ATTENTION. And although it's tough to secure ink
from a major urban publication, garnering good reviews from sources like The
LA Weekly, Variety, The Hollywood Reporter or The Los Angeles Times will certainly
help screenwriters and filmmakers secure representation, film distribution,

Slamdance 2002 kicked off Jan 11 with the premier of 13 Moons, a film
about a bizarre assortment of people that find themselves all together in an
effort to save a six-year-old boy's life. Slamdance, taking place at the Silvermine,
is a festival of independent, low-budget films that runs independently of, but
at the same time, as the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. Slamdance
runs from Jan 11-19, with films falling under eight categories: $99 Specials,

A lot has been happening around the town of Park City the last few days. Many
of these happenings have involved large sums of money being put on the table
to buy little independent films with big stars. And sadly, another of these
happenings has been the mourning of director Ted Demme (Blow). As news
of Demme's death slowly reached the Sundance Film Festival, it at first was
treated as juts a rumor on the streets. The rumor became truth during Monday
afternoon as many new...
Mondays usually have that back to business feeling and this definitely seems
to be the case today. The crowds have thinned a bit - the afternoon Eccles screening
of Todd Solondz's Storytelling, is not nearly as thronged as Saturday's
Gerry showing, which seems to be emerging as a big buzz film, more for
its artistic triumph than its commercial possibilities.
Of today's screenings, people are talking about Patricia Cardoso's debut feature,
Real Women Have Curves, Finn Taylor...
