The 2020 edition of the Lucca Film Festival e Europa Cinema has been postponed to the end of May

The festival will take place from the 28th of May to the 8th of June in Lucca and Viareggio

The 2020 edition of the Lucca Film Festival e Europa Cinema will take place in various venues between Lucca and Viareggio but, more importantly, it has been postponed to the 28th of May - 8th of June (and not from the 18th to the 26th of April as previously stated). This is due to organizational reasons and because of the national and international character of current events which “have brought technical difficulties for the planning of events in the month of April”, the or-ganizer of the festival explained in a note.

“This will represent an opportunity – Nicola Borrelli, president of the manifestation, said – to experience the festival in a new, exciting timeframe, i.e. that moment before summer where activities can be held outdoors thanks to the mild temperatures and the stunning scenery offered by the cities of the festival. On the one hand Lucca’s beautiful squares, historical monuments and unique gardens (such as Palazzo Pfanner) and on the other hand Viareggio’s beautiful sea-side and one of the most elegant and famous promenades in Italy".

Due to the dates of the festival being moved forward, the application deadline for the feature and short film competitions and the chance to participate in the Effetto Cinema Notte sec-tion of the festival have also been postponed to the 31st of March (for further information, visit

The schedule

The festival is one of the main events of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca and this year, just like in the past, it will pay homage to the career of international stars with film trib-utes (screenings) and the traditional masterclasses, very unique moments that connect movie lov-ers - and not just them - to the stars of the international silver screen: from Oliver Stone to Da-vid Lynch, from Rutger Hauer to George RomeroPaolo Sorrentino, and Willem Dafoe. The eventful schedule will be divided as follows: the ‘In Competition’ section (Italian premières of feature films and short films) which has the goal to discover cinema’s rising stars (the selected movies will be announced on the 21st of April); The ‘Out of Competition’ previews (movies aimed at the general public – screened in the presence of stars, actors and directors - that will be eventually released in Italian cinemas); the Art section with dedicated exhibitions: this year a tribute to Alberto SordiFederico Fellini and an exhibition dedicated to Studio Azzurro. The performative events of Effetto Cinema Notte (the festival’s section that really makes the city come to life), the beautiful sets and musical choices of the red carpet, and the original theatrical productions will also play a central role in the festival’s schedule. Last but not least, the Educational section, which focuses on activities for students of different ages, and Europa Cinema a Viareggio, with a schedule bustling with events consecrated to the European movie culture in-volving guests and screenings.

The venues

The festival will take place in several venues located in both cities: in Lucca, the main venues will be the Astra and Centrale cinemas together with Palazzo Ducale, whilst in Viareggio they still need to be defined.
