Oscar Winning Director Costa-Gavras in Philaderlphia on October 22, Only US Appearance!

La Cinematheque: New French Films is being presented by the Philadelphia Cinema Alliance, in partnership with the Embassy of France, DC, the French-American Cultural Foundation, TV 5 Monde and the Prince Music Theater. A very special event, as the Oscar-winning and Internationally-acclaimed, director Costa Gavras, will premiere his latest film, Eden is West, and be honored with an award, at his only appearance in the USA.

"Philadelphia Cinema Alliance (PCA), continues La Cinematheque: New French Films with the second film in the once-a-month series with Eden is West (Eden ‘a cliques) by director Costa-Gavras
Thursday, October 22, 2009 6:45pm, Prince Music Theater (1412 Chestnut Street).

Prior to the screening, Costa-Gavras will receive the PCA Artistic Achievement Award.
The special award presentation will include a conversation with the Oscar winning director and a tribute clip reel featuring highlights of “his body of work”:Z (1969), The Confession (1970), State of Siege (1972), Missing (1982), Hanna K (1983) and Betrayed (1988) just to name a few.
“With Eden is West, we’re hoping to introduce him to a younger audience in addition to the many cinephiles in our region who already admire and respect his films but haven’t had the opportunity to see much of his more recent work,” said Raymond Murray, Artistic Director,

A HANDSOME young man from somewhere on the far shores of the Mediterranean jumps off a ship full of illegal immigrants. He swims towards the lights on the coastline, hoping to make it to a better life in France.

He can hardly believe his eyes when he wakes up on a beach next morning. Naked men and women are frolicking in the sun with beach balls. Welcome to Europe, the film seems to be saying, a veritable paradis sur mer. But is this a land of freedom or an exhausted, decadent civilisation in decline?
