Farewell to the actor Rutger Hauer

I had  the privilege of working with Rutger Hauer sometime ago, when a distributor, running Sony: what a gentleman. Last time we chatted was at Antalya Film Festival.

At 2019 Lucca Film Festival he left his environmentalist message for the new generations

"The Earth is good. You have to side with the Earth. And maybe you can hold onto this story and the Earth". This was the environmentalist call that Rutger Hauer, who died recently, launched in front of hundreds of people, precisely on the occasion of the tribute that the Lucca Film Festival and Europa Cinema had dedicated to him in the Effetto Cinema Notte.

An unforgettable replicant in Blade Runner, an actor in more than 170 films, he was an icon of science fiction cinema, for the role of the android Roy Batty, in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. His monologue " I saw things that you humans..." has become proverbial in the same way as Wilder's "Nobody is Perfect!" is remembered as one of the most famous interpretations in the history of cinema.

The Dutch actor celebrated the 50th anniversary of his artistic career at the Lucca Film Festival - Europa Cinema. "I am honoured to celebrate my 50th anniversary in the world of the cinema right here in Lucca"-- Hauer said, after receiving the Festival Lifetime Achievement Award -- “Italy is like a second home to me, I fell in love with this country during the filming of Lady Hawke, a time when I was able to admire all its artistic wonders".

The festival dedicated a large open-air tribute performance to the actor entitled Tears in Rain – as part of Effetto Cinema Notte to celebrate Ridley Scott's 1982 cult film, set in Los Angeles, right in 2019.

"We will jealously hold dear the memory of the moments that Rutger Hauer shared with us in Lucca – commented the President of Fondazione Crl Marcello Bertocchini – “We lost a unique talent, who has been able to get a hold on the minds not only of film aficionados, but also of the general public."

The Lucca Film Festival e Europa Cinema directed by Nicola Borrelli, is one of the key events organized and sponsored by the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca. The main sponsors of the event are Banca Generali and Banca Pictet, whereas the exhibits are produced with the support of Banca Société Générale. The organization of the Lucca Film Festival e Europa Cinema is also made possible thanks to the support of the Fondazione Banca del Monte di Lucca, Lucar Spa, ICare, Martinelli Luce, Wella, Lions Club, Luccaorganizza, Il Ciocco S.p.A, Cantina Campo alle Comete, MiBACT (the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, Activities and Tourism), the Region of Tuscany, Fondazione Sistema Toscana, the City of Lucca, the City of Viareggio, the Province of Lucca with the collaboration and co-production of the Province of Lucca, Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Italia, Teatro del Giglio in Lucca, Fondazione Giacomo Puccini, Puccini Museum - Casa Natale, Fondazione Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti, Università degli Studi di Firenze, Accademia delle Belle Arti di Carrara, CNA Cinema e Audiovisivo Toscana, Istiuto Luigi Boccherini and Liceo Artistico Musicale e Coreutico Augusto Passaglia. Thanks also to the Federazione Italiana Teatro Amatori (FITA), Lucca Comics & Games, Trenitalia Regional Management, Unicoop Firenze, Confcommercio delle Province di Lucca e Massa Carrara, the Degree Course in Performing Arts and Civilization Department of Communication and Forms of Knowledge at the University of Pisa and the Photolux Festival for their collaboration.

The Lucca Film Festival e Europa Cinema is an annual event that celebrates and promotes cinematic culture. The Festival is able to engage an ever-growing public through screenings, exhibitions, conferences and performances, which range from mainstream to experimental cinema. Throughout its history, Lucca Film Festival has excelled thanks to its ambitious and well-researched programming. The Festival has paid tribute to celebrated figures in the cinema world while at the same time rediscovering other notable names and identifying up-and-coming talents. The beautiful cities of Lucca and Viareggio contribute to the Festival’s appeal, serving as the stunning backdrop to an event that has become a much awaited and not-to-be-missed happening in Italy and Europe.
