Cinéma Moderne begins the year with a rich and entertaining program!

January at Cinéma Moderne:

The Great Darkened Days - First Stripes - Border -

Hale County This Morning, This Evening and much more!

Cinéma Moderne, a proud finalist of the Grand Prix du Conseil des Arts de Montréal 2019, begins the year with a rich and entertaining program! This January will feature such recent releases as Border (Ali Abbasi), which won the Un Certain Regard prize at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, as well as Hale County This Morning, This Evening (RaMell Ross), RIDM’s Grand Prize for Best International Feature and selected on the Oscar 2019 short list.

The theatre is also thrilled to screen eagerly anticipated new local films such as The Great Darkened Days by Maxime Giroux and First Stripes by Jean-François Caissy. Several screenings will be held with the directors in attendance. Edge of the Knife (Gwaai Edenshaw, Helen Haig-Brown), the first feature film entirely shot in Haida language, a dialect spoken in certain archipelagos of British Columbia and Alaska, will also be presented. A screening event is planned with producer and cinematographer Jonathan Frantz.

It will also be possible to see some of the most acclaimed films of 2018: The Wild Pear Tree, John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection, The Guilty, 24 Frames and Ryuichi Sakamoto: Coda. Alfonso Cuarón’s Roma, winner of the Best Foreign Language Film and Best Director awards at the 2019 Golden Globes, is still showing at Cinéma Moderne. Due to the popularity of these screenings, reservation online is highly recommended.

NEW RELEASES

Based on a short story by Swedish author John Ajvide Lindqvist, the fantastic film Border (Ali Abbasi) will screen at Cinéma Moderne starting January 17, in Swedish with French subtitles.

Winner of the Documentary Special Jury Award for Creative Vision at Sundance, Hale County This Morning, This Evening (RaMell Ross) will be presented starting January 25 in its original English version with French subtitles.

The captivating Edge of the Knife (Gwaai Edenshaw & Helen Haig-Brown), selected as one of the 10 best films of 2018 according to TIFF programmers, will screen on January 27 and 31 as part of the Isuma retrospective, organized in collaboration with the first independent Inuit video production company in Canada. Producer and cinematographer Jonathan Frantz will be present for a discussion with the audience on January 31.

There will also be screening events hosted by two Quebec filmmakers whose films are opening this January. First Stripes, a film by Jean-François Caissy, will be screening at Cinéma Moderne from January 18. Maxime Giroux will present The Great Darkened Days starting January 25, and will be in attendance with members of his crew on January 27 to meet the audience.

SPECIAL SCREENINGS

As part of the release of First Stripes and The Great Darkened Days, Cinéma Moderne is also showing successful earlier films by these Quebec filmmakers in January. The public will be able to see Jean-François Caissy’s Guidelines (2014) on January 10 and 12, as well as Journey’s End (2009) on January 16. The director will be present after the screenings for a discussion with the public.

The series M les Maudits will present the restored version of Wanda (1970) on January 24 and 30. Barbara Loden’s first and only feature film, an independent American film classic, paints a poignant and compassionate portrait of a woman on the margins of society.

LES PETITS MODERNES

The family series Les Petits modernes offers movies for children! 7-year-olds and older will have the chance to see Claude BarrasMy Life as a Zucchini (Ma vie de courgette) in its French version with English subtitles. The movie won the Audience Award at the 2016 Annecy International Animated Film Festival and the César for Best Animated Film in 2017.
