Martin Scorsese Masterclass in Cannes

Apichatpong Weerasethakul, Guest of Honor of the first edition of the 4 +1 Film Festival

The Thai director Apichatpong Weerasethakul, winner of the Golden Palm at the last Cannes Film Festival and the Jose Luis Guarner Critics Award at Sitges with Uncle Boonmee who can Recall his Past Lives (2010) -which has also been proposed as a candidate for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film by Thailand -will be the Guest of Honor of the first edition of the 4+1 Film Festival FUNDACION MAPFRE. This event - which will be held simultaneously in Bogotá, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, Madrid and Sao Paulo from the 11th to 14th of November 2010 - will honor the outstanding career of this young filmmaker screening his most significant works. In addition, Weerasethakul will attend this year’s official site of the Festival, the MALBA-FUNDACIÓN COSTANTINI of Buenos Aires to receive this recognition. The Thai filmmaker will also offer a Master Class titled Delirium, a survey of moving image practice with clips, sketches, and references of his work from 1994-2010. Often non-linear, with a strong sense of dislocation, Apichatpong's works deal with memory, subtly addressing personal politics and social issues.
Weerasethakul, a multidisciplinary artist awarded in the most prestigious festivals
Author of a fascinating cinema which dynamites film conventions and the processing of time, mixing professional actors with ordinary citizens and giving relevant space to the supernatural, Weerasethakul has won international awards with films like Tropical Malady (2004) - Jury Award at Cannes festival- or Blissfully Jours (2002) - Un Certain Regard Prize. He has also participated in the official selection of the Berlin Film Festival (with The Adventure of Iron Pussy, 2003) and Venice (with Syndromes and a Century, 2006). The Asian film director combines his work behind the camera with the creation of installations for museums in different countries funded by sponsors such as the UN, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior. He also collaborates actively with agencies such as the Nelson Mandela Foundation and has participated in a film commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
