A Festival of Dreams Comes to Brooklyn December 8

Brooklyn, NYC: Sunday, December 8, 2018. New York City film director Jeffrey Wengrofsky, curator of the award-winning Secrets series of film festivals, will bring Secrets of the Deep: DREAMS on FILM, a short film festival fully dedicated to exploring relationships between cinema and the dream experience to Film Noir Cinema (122 Meserole Ave, Greenpoint, Brooklyn, NY).  Ten films were selected from among 415 international submissions.  The program includes films by Douglas Hart (Jesus and Mary Chain), Joe Whitney (The Flaming Stars), Kirsty Allison (Cold Lips Magazine, UK), actor Emily O’Brien (Young and the Restless), producer Gordon Raphael (The Strokes, Regina Spektor), and Brazilian horror director Vinicius Santos, among others. Secrets of the Deep premiered in NYC at the historic Gene Frankel Theatre in downtown Manhattan in January 2018, and subsequently at Reverb (Baltimore, MD) on May 18, and at the Berkeley Video and Film Festival on November 4, 2018. Secrets of the Deep received the award for the Best Experimental Film Festival and the Secrets series is now an official qualifying festival for Berkeley.

Secrets of the Deep received a rave review by Graham Fuller of the NYC Film Critics Circle in The Culture Trip: https://theculturetrip.com/north-america/usa/new-york/articles/experience-dream-life-films-new-yorks-gene-frankel-theatre/

Chuck Foster praised Secrets of the Deep in Film Threat: http://filmthreat.com/features/secrets-of-the-deep-film-festival-as-traveling-sideshow/

Producer of the event is New York City filmmaker Jeffrey Wengrofsky, who has released seven short films on countercultural artists and is finishing his first feature film. Secrets of the Deep is the fourth installment of Wengrofsky’s “Secrets…” series.  Each of the Secrets programs selects ten short films on a specific topic: Secrets of the Heart, Secrets of the Insect World, Secrets of the Intoxicated Life, and the new program on dreams. Wengrofsky will present the program, which includes his film "Marti Domination in the Life of Dreams," a surreal documentary featuring the star of Matthew Barney's Cremaster I

A third of our lives is spent sleeping.   Whether understood as a form of foreknowledge, a portal to a metaphysical plane, or a domain of psychological de-sublimation, dreams have rightly been the subject of spiritual speculation, scientific research, and artistic endeavor since the dawning of humankind.   As arguably the most dream-like of the arts, cinema seems naturally suited for this endeavor.  Giving dreams their pride of place among human obsessions, SECRETS of the Deep: DREAMS ON FILM will exhibit short films about dreaming, featuring dreams, or films that are dream-like.
