50 new projects looking for co-financing at the 12th Mannheim Meetings 2008

The 12th MANNHEIM MEETINGS 2008, taking place 12 through 16 November 2008, will introduce 50 new, independent arthouse film projects. The international market for co-production, sales and film distribution, which is attended by about 300 participants annually, will present new productions by noted and established directors such as Karim Traidia or Ivan Fila, as well as debut features of international newcomers.
The selection offers a wide geographic distribution, as the projects are coming from 22 countries.
„The projects presented are all very capturing productions. We are expecting an array of accreditations for the one-to-one business meetings with the representatives of these film projects projects“, says Gudula Meinzolt, who has been the managing director of the MANNHEIM MEETINGS for four years. „We are looking forward to successful meetings, which offer the film producers a great chance for finding partners to co-finance their projects, and have a lot of matchmaking-potential. Additional offers such as the consulting service for script development, industry lectures, and informal lunches or parties make the MANNHEIM MEETINGS even more efficient.“

Last year, the project „Last Cowboy Standing“ by Finnish Juonifilm found German co-producers Niko Film, Berlin. Canada and Latin America are regions which are traditionally strongly represented at the MANNHEIM MEETINGS: this year, Canada will present five, Latin America seven new projects at the Meetings.

Total budget of the negotiated projects is 91 Mio Euro.

The managing board announced first highlights of this year’s Meetings:
Golden Globe-Winner Karim Traidia („The Polish Bride“) will introduce his new project „Identité Zero“. The idea is based on the true story of an illigal immigrant from North Africa, who had been living in France for 15 years with the name and identity of a Frenchman.

Ivan Fila will introduce „The K Principle“, a film about the most famous Czech detainee and his tragic life.

Lars Kraume, who has come to fame in Germany with „Good Morning Mr Grothe“ and „Keine Lieder über Liebe“, will present his new science- fiction project „Die kommenden Tage“, which is produced by Jürgen Vogel and Mathias Glasner’s Badlands Film company.

Argentinian director and newcomer Santiago Girault, whose film „UPA“ has been screened at the 2007 International Filmfestival Mannheim- Heidelberg, will introduce „Perla“, the story of a young transsexual artist who has to establish himself against the prejudices of the rural environment he is living in.

The noted production studio Brandov Studios, Prague, presents „Upside Down“, a project of Martin Dolensky, The story is about a dysfunctional family looking for happiness, while being consumed by life in and around a shopping centre.

„Sal“, a neo-western by Chilenean Diego Rougier, is about a director obsessed with Westerns, who accidentally finds himself within a typical gerne-adventure.

A dossier with all projects will be available on 1 October 2008 at www.iffmh.de.
