FIPADOC 2022 First announcementsWednesday, 15 December at the CNC in Paris, FIPADOC President Anne Georget and FIPADOC Managing and artistic director Christine Camdessus reveal the major lines for the International Festival of Documentary’s coming edition, which will take place in Biarritz, 17-23 January 2022.
This includes: the announcement of the opening film and the two preview screenings, and the list of films presented out of competition: all films in the ENCORE DES DOCUMENTAIRES category, a programme featuring five major events this year. In addition to this sneak-preview of the competition, details of the Industry Days and Campus programmes will be unveiled.
The nine competitive selections will be revealed on Thursday, 6 January in Biarritz.
OPENING FILM AND PREVIEW SCREENINGS The festival will begin on Monday, 17 January with the screening of: - Buena Vista Social Club by Wim Wenders (celebrating 30 years of ARTE).
As every year, two documentary films chosen by France Télévisions and ARTE will be presented as sneak previews during the week: - Deneuve, la reine Catherine by Virginie Linhart (France) – France Télévisions, - Flee by Jonas Poher Rasmussen (Denmark-France) – ARTE.
FRANCE CULTURE PODCASTS France Culture, a leader in audio documentary, offers a selection of podcasts on three specifically-chosen subjects to explore our relationship with the ocean and coastline: surfing, oceanic sentiment, and the whale kingdom. These three audio documentary series can be listened to as you look out at the ocean (from the Casino) for a total immersion experience. (Register on-site)
FOCUS ON… BENELUX: FEATURED REGION FOR FIPADOC 2022 With strong production across four territories in three countries, the Benelux region is a major contributor to European documentary. FIPADOC is pleased to honour a selection of documentaries created in the past two years from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg:

Focus on… Benelux also includes: screenings of additional films, meet-up sessions between producers, dedicated conferences and round tables, as well as a guest of honour: Heddy Honigmann.
HEDDY HONIGMANN, GUEST OF HONOUR A tribute will be paid to the great Dutch documentary filmmaker Heddy Honigmann, and five of her most emblematic films will be screened during the festival: ● No hay camino – There Is No Path (2021) ● 100UP (2020) ● The Underground Orchestra (1998) ● O amor natural (1996) ● Metal and Melancholy (1994)
CARTE BLANCHE FOR ARTE’S 30th ANNIVERSARY With France presiding over the European Union and ARTE’s 30th anniversary both falling this year, ARTE is offering a new showcase for a selection of emblematic documentaries that have marked the network’s history with a carte blanche at FIPADOC and the screening of the following films: ● Buena Vista Social Club by Wim Wenders (Germany) ● Alma, une enfance de la violence (Alma: A Violent Childhood) (digital experience, 2012) ● Glenn Gould: Hereafter by Bruno Monsaingeon (Canada, France, 2005) ● The Missing Picture by Rithy Panh (France, Cambodia, 2013) ● Language Does Not Lie by Stan Neumann (France, 2004) ● Dancing Dreams – in The Footsteps of Pina Bausch by Rainer Hoffmann and Anne Linsel (Germany, 2010) ● Opération Lune (Operation Moon) by William Karel (France, 2002) ● Over the Limit by Marta Prus (Poland, Germany, Finland, 2017) ● Récréations (Playtime) by Claire Simon (France, 1993)
NEW THIS YEAR: THE “TASTE OF DOC” SELECTION FIPADOC 2022 presents a new selection of non-competition films about gastronomy, food, and healthy eating, called Taste of Doc. The following films will be presented: ● Arzak depuis 1897 (Arzak Since1897) by Asier Altuna (Spain, 2020) ● Come Back Anytime by John Daschbach (Japan, 2021) ● Guérande, un peu de la beauté du monde (Guérande, a Little Beauty in This World) by Sophie Averty (France, 2021) ● The Taste of Desire by Willemiek Kluijfhout (Netherlands, 2021) ● Le chef errant (The Wandering Chef) by Hye-Ryeong Park (South Korea, 2018) ● And several digital experiences designed especially for children.
FAMILY FILMS SELECTION To develop a taste for documentary in the younger generation, the festival is offering for the second time, films aimed at family audiences from age eight and up: ● En terrain libre (On Free Land) by Marie Famulicki, Delphine Moreau and Corinne Sullivan (France, 2020) ● L’appel du Nord (Call of The North) by David Guersan and Thibaut Branquart (France, 2020) ● Ride the Wave by Martyn Robertson (United Kingdom, 2021) ● Yukon, un rêve blanc (Yukon: A Dream in White) by Mathieu Le Lay (France, 2021)
SMART, THE DIGITAL EXPERIENCE SPACE SMART is the free access space of FIPADOC entirely dedicated to digital documentary experiences, at the Bellevue in Biarritz. It will offer some 25 virtual and augmented reality works, 360° films, interactive documentary narratives, and web series to experience … as well as podcasts, as part of our partnership with France Culture.
INSIGHT INTO THE COMPETITIONS Receiving dispatches from around the world, startling and full of uncertainty; stories of truth and the courage it takes to tell them… has become more important than ever to give meaning to these currents in which we have all been swept up. Stories by journalists… stories by women… stories from Europe…Political stories… Stories told through animation… Anne Georget and Christine Camdessus gave those present a sneak preview of several films from this year’s programme:

INDUSTRY DAYS Industry Days will take place from 17-21 January 2022 in Biarritz. Designed for all professionals in the documentary sector, they feature multiple meetings, conferences, and round tables reserved exclusively for audiovisual professionals in production, broadcasting, and distribution; and for publishing houses, festivals and markets, and music labels. The Industry Days programme will be announced on the festival website (from 21 December 2021). Accreditations are available here. Please note that for this year only, we are offering a new professional online-access pass for 50 euros (plus tax) to follow exclusive events online in English.
CAMPUS Invested in sharing its passion for documentary with the younger generation, FIPADOC CAMPUS adapts its activities to secondary and tertiary students, offering several streams of age-appropriate programmes by theme. This year features a joint exhibition in partnership with the Kassel festival in Germany: Débordements / Überlaufe by Clara Pacquet which will be on display in the Casino during the festival.
