The Marché Buzz: Day 2 - opening film under attack

With the 72nd Cannes Film Festival and with that the Marché Du Film just having opened yesterday, everyone has been buzzing about the opening film. Fans and critics alike had high hopes for Jim Jarmusch’s zombie centered film as it did receive the honor of commencing the festival, but this hopes were quickly shattered after the premiere. The Marché Du Film and the publications covering the festival have centered around this film on the second day here in Cannes. These publication ranging from Variety to Screen: At Cannes Film Festival have critiqued the film and its director. Variety has gone as far to say the film was “disappointing” with Jarmusch’s lack of innovation and poor use of clichés, and Screen agreed describing the horror flick as “unfocused” and “non-cohesive.”

As for the fans and those partaking in the festival, their opinions have tended to follow suit. Many people who attended one of the various screenings within the first 24 hours of the release have agreed that the film seemed to lack focus and a definitive message, despite Jarmusch’s attempts to critique consumerism in today’s society through extended metaphors and humor.

The festival is now in full swing and focus is now not only on the films in competition, but the ones in the Marché that are on their way to making it to the big screen.
