The European Audiovisual Observatory invites you to our traditional Saturday morning conference in Cannes!  This year we're asking what makes a successful European film, and how we could make more!

European films currently achieve a respectable share of 26% of cinema admissions. The % of US films is lower in Europe than in most non-European and non-US countries. However, the % of European films is stagnating. Indeed the structure of admissions to European films has changed, with fewer European blockbusters and a majority of mid-range films accounting for the majority of admissions. The number of admissions of European films outside Europe has fallen sharply, perhaps linked to the current lack of European blockbusters. And so national admissions are even more important. This market configuration of course creates very different realities and opportunities for films originating in large and small markets.

So join us for this annual Cannes conference! This year we're asking:

How do we define the success of European films?
What is the interplay between festivals, theatrical distribution and TV and VOD?

What policy goals can boost European cinema and produce more successes?

The Observatory’s two Deputy Heads of Department, Martin Kanzler and Sophie Valais will provide traditional European scene setting information on this year’s theme.  As every year we’ll be bringing together a stellar panel of cinema industry professionals, producers, studio representatives, exhibitors representatives from public bodies such as film institutes. This expert panel will be moderated by Maja Cappelo and Gilles Fontaine.

This conference is open to anyone accredited to the Cannes Film Market, the Festival or holding a press accreditation. Basically if you can get into the Palais des festivals you can come! Register now to bag your free seat. Conference language is English. See you in Cannes!
