CANNES FESTIVAL BREAKING NEWS

Ladj Ly's New Film "Les Miserables" Reflects the Hardships of Impoverished Areas

Screen%20Shot%202019-05-16%20at%2012.19.12%20PM.png

Director Ladj Ly of the film Les Miserables

Today, there was no better way to start off the third day of the 72nd Cannes Film Festival than with a press conference featuring the team from the new French film titled" Les Miserables." The film centers around a group of riot police called into action against protesters deriving from impoverished urban housing estates. Director Ladj Ly gave his remarks relating himself to some of the characters in the film who come from these neighborhoods explaining how he himself grew up in such an area as well.

The film also features young actors Al Hassan Ly and Issa Perica with roles of boys who grow up in said areas. "It's always good to reserve hope, hope for the future," Ladj Ly mentioned when explaining the roles of both of the young teenagers.

When asked about why the film shares the same title as the famous Victor Hugo book, Ly explained that where the film was shot doesn't happen to be very far from where Hugo wrote Les Miserables in 1862 and the characters in the film share the level of poverty of many in the characters from Hugo's novel.

Press Conference featuring The Dead Don't Die

Earlier today in a press conference of the first premiere of the Cannes Film Festival, "The Dead Don't Die," director Jim Jarmusch and much of the cast extensively discussed all of the real world implications that were said to have been represented in the film. Of the themes from the apocalyptic horror film, the most notable was that pertaining to society's treatment of the planet and the devestating effects it could have. The response from the table was that the film equally...

MARKET BREAKING NEWS

The Marché Buzz: Day 3

saudi%20cannes_3.jpg

Movies and Morals

The Cannes film festival has a focus on inclusivity, meaning filmmakers and film companies from all over the world are welcome to attend and then expand the film industry back to their native countries. With that being said, one country in particular has a questionable history that conflicts with bringing the film industry home: Saudi Arabia. Last year at the festival, Saudi Arabia had its own pavilion on the Croisette in hopes of creating relationships between the country and international film companies, specifically to bring Hollywood- type productions to their own industry. The country had intended to become a movie capital in the Middle East, but with the political unrest caused by the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi between last year’s festival and this year’s, the nation has seemed to back track in regard to support of industry expansion. This year, there is no Saudi Arabian pavilion, and much less positive attention. Despite these set-backs, many companies are still showing interest saying the country can effectively modernize.

Imax has announced their intent to expand in Saudi Arabia despite “moral issues” because of market potential. AMC is following the same path, planning to open dozens of theaters in a country that just recently lifted a ban on having theaters at all. Even with the support of many individuals in the film industry, Saudi Arabia has been keeping a low profile at the festival this year, and all of these issues between morals and movie markets have made it difficult for the country to create international relationships and bring the industry into their country. The country essentially started from nothing in regard to its now present film industry, and with the support of major companies like Imax, only more can be done to further the presence of movies in this modernizing country.

Art House Cinema in Europe: "We are talking about cinemas, and protecting cinemas"

IMG_4873.JPG
There was a conference today about art house cinema in Europe. The discussion was lead by Roxane Arnold, François Amyé, Christian Bräuer, Christine Eloy, Katarzyna Siniarska, and Carla Simón. A major point made at the conference was how the definition of art house films differs from country to country and so does the audience, which makes it difficult to make any generalizations on how art house cinemas are doing. However, it seems like older people are the ones...
