Jan Harlan serves Jury President at Bucarest B-EST 8th edition

Jury President of the eighth edition of Bucharest IFF

Brief biography Jan Harlan

I joined Stanley Kubrick in 1969 for his Napoleon project, which was unfortunately abandoned, but I enjoyed working with Stanley and he liked me, so I added the study of film-production with a great teacher to my previous profession. My first film as an assistant was “A Clockwork Orange”.

Four years later I became Kubrick’s Executive Producer and worked for Warner Bros. on “Barry Lyndon”, “The Shining”, “Full Metal Jacket” and “Eyes Wide Shut”. One of my sidelines was suggesting music. After Stanley Kubrick’s death in 1999 I worked with Steven Spielberg on “A.I. Artificial Intelligence”. Later I made the documentary “Stanley Kubrick: A Life in Pictures” and a documentary about the British actor Malcolm McDowell (both for Warner Bros); also some films with students and a film with an international youth orchestra around the Dvorak Cello Concerto with Alexander Baillie.

In addition to lecturing at film schools and serving in juries at international competitions, I am preparing a documentary film on Kubrick’s Napoleon project with Erik Nelson and Alison Castle, quite a nostalgic closing of a circle.

Jan gives great Q&A at the end of each of he film from Stanley Kubrick shown at the Festival (Shining, tomorrow Barry Lyndon with a new digital print...)

About Bucharest International Film Festival - BIFF - B-EST

Dima Madalina
(B-EST IFF)

B-EST IFF 2009 takes place at Cinema Studio, between 23rd and 30th March.
Price for one ticket 8 RON, 4 films pass 24 RON.
All students, regardless of university, have free access, based on their student id.

Buchar-EST International Film Festival (B-EST IFF) is the first major feature film competition organized in Bucharest, starting with 2005.

The aim of the festival has been to become a forum that encourages new cinema trends. We wish to discover new talents, to promote young filmmakers that have achieved recognition both at a national level, as well as in prestigious international competitions. We wish to bring a selection of best quality films to the cinema audience of Bucharest, and we invite you to take part in this event.

B-EST is a festival dedicated to art cinema, but also to those that want to express something new and different through film. Although the focus is represented by independent creations, low and medium-budget productions, B-EST has always managed to include important international awarded films in its selections.
