Great Films to Watch on Netflix

Finding a genuinely great movie in Netflix can become a difficult task

Netflix offers access to more movies and TV shows that was ever possible before. Not only do we have a huge library of content available, but it’s also more convenient than past services like Blockbuster, or even renting DVDs in the mail.

The only problem is that we can sometimes be spoiled for choice and spend hours just looking for something new to watch. To save you some time, here are some great options available on Netflix now.

Rounders

Rounders is a movie about high-stakes poker, starring Edward Norton and Matt Damon. It was released in 1998, but developed a cult following in the early 2000s. It tells the story of Mike, a law student from New York City who is a talented poker player.

He gets into trouble when playing in a rigged game against a Russian mobster, and decides to give up playing to concentrate on his studies and build a life with his girlfriend. Things are going well until an old friend is released from prison and seeks Mike’s help to pay off some debt.

Many credit Rounders with sparking the poker boom, a period in the early 2000s that saw the popularity of the sport increase exponentially. During this period, users of specialized sites like PokerStars rocketed, while new live poker events like the European Poker Tour sprung up.

Ocean’s Eleven

An ensemble cast that includes Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts and George Clooney star in this remake of the 1960’s film with the same name. The film follows Danny Ocean, who brings together a team of 11 master criminals to pull off a huge $150 million heist.

The money is stolen from three of Las Vegas’ biggest and most famous casinos, the MGM Grand, the Mirage, and the Bellagio, all on the night of a blockbuster boxing match.

The casinos have some of the most high-tech security in the world, using multiple layers of protection. However, Ocean’s eleven manage to find a way around it, in a way that leaves the viewer in suspense all the way through.

Making an impressive $450 million at the box office, two sequels were made, although neither are as good as the first.

The Social Network

Why let the truth get in the way of a good story? The Social Network is a film that loosely follows the story of the founding of Facebook. Jesse Eisenberg portrays Mark Zuckerberg as a social recluse who has a singular focus on making his site “The Facebook” a success, with plenty of collateral damage on the way.

Some of those depicted in the film, including Zuckerberg himself, claim that the movie isn’t an accurate depiction of the real events. That said, many of the key plot elements, including the legal battles with the Winklevoss twins and the involvement of Sean Parker, are at least based on elements of fact.

Netflix offers access to thousands of movies and TV shows

Space Jam

There are plenty of films that combine live-action and animation together. However, most drop animated characters into a real-world setting. Think Ted, Scooby-Doo or King Kong for just a few examples.

Space Jam went the other way, dropping real life basketballers into an animated world to create one of the best basketball games ever played. The film is about as stereotypically 1990s as it could possibly be, including songs like R. Kelly’s “I Believe I Can Fly”, plenty of Nike product placements, and Bill Murray in his prime.

It was a huge commercial success and has been re-released several times since. There was also a string of comics, video games and other merchandise released off the back of it.

Rumors had been circulating for a while that there will be a Space Jam sequel. It is due for release in 2021, but nothing will compare to the original 90s masterpiece.
