From August 25 to September 1st, “Beyond Borders” is going to make Castellorizo once again a meeting point for the best history and social documentary filmmakers, and for people of the arts and letters from Greece and the world. The competition this year includes 25 foreign and Greek films of the highest artistic value, such as: “The Greek of the Russian Empire” (Russia) “Fatherland” “Deep Roots” Our Territory” “To the Living” (France) “Hugo Blanco: Deep River” (Peru), “The Olden Heralds” (Cuba), “Children Below Deck” (Germany) “Roots” “Tokei Maru” και «I Itsai Romni», «Μια ζωή» (Ελλάδα). The Academic Partner of Honour is the University of York and the Media Partner of Honour is BBC4. Beyond Borders also includes a multitude of educational programmes and various cultural events for all ages. If you are lucky enough to be there, you will have the chance to visit the photography exhibition about the ANZAC (courtesy of the Australian Embassy in Athens), see the theatrical play “Nostos, Ulysses’ return” directed by Thodoris Gonis and enjoy music concerts by Babis Tsertos (tribute to Giorgos Kavouras) and the Music School of Pallini (tribute to Asia Minor music). Furthermore, there will be an International Panel about Civil Disobedience, with the participation of distinguished scholars and journalists. Beyond Borders is also hosting several activities for children such as swimming lessons by award-winning instructor Roberto Calich, the narration of Aesop’s Fables and folk tales by charismatic narrator Dimitris Avouris, the theatrical plays of Karaghiozis by the Xanthi Shadow Theatre and the lessons on Homer’s The Odyssey by theatrologist Sousana Kardoulia. From 26/8 to 31/8, the children of Castellorizo will have the chance to learn the mechanics behind a real explosion, how to make their own soap and how to recycle paper all by themselves, courtesy of Eugenides Foundation. They will also observe the starry night-sky of Castellorizo and learn to recognize planetary bodies of our galaxy, with the help of experts from the National Observatory. Finally, in collaboration with the National History Museum they will learn more about the history of Castellorizo, and they will illustrate a fairytale!
