Foto/photo: © Evan Calder Williams, Anne Low The 14th Forum Expanded is moving to a new location: The silent green Kulturquartier will open a new Berlin exhibition venue and the Forum Expanded group exhibition, which has been taking place annually since 2006, will be the inaugural event. The 1600 square meter Betonhalle on the grounds of the former Wedding crematorium will soon serve primarily as a venue for film and video exhibitions, as well as for concerts and conferences.
The group exhibition will be expanded into Ebensperger Rhomberg Gallery and Luxoom Lab, spaces also located on the silent green grounds. And for the first time, the exhibition duration will extend past the Berlinale festival dates (February 7-17, 2019) until March 9. The exhibition opening will take place on February 6.
This year’s theme “ANTIKINO (The Siren’s Echo Chamber)” questions contemporary systems of valorisation in cinema, and proposes to discuss the changed relationship between moving images and lived life. A mythological theme – the singing sirens and the Odyssey – is transposed into a present defined by experiences of migration, displacement and the shadows of colonial history as much as by the affective feedback loops in social media. ANTIKINO explores multiple ways of leaving the echo chamber.
Among the selected artists are Coco Fusco, Laura Horelli, Karrabing Film Collective, Mpumelelo Mcata and Perivi Katjavivi, Paul McCarthy and Damon McCarthy, Shelly Silver, Catherine Sullivan, Evan Calder Williams and Anne Low, as well as Ala Younis. The full list of participating artists and filmmakers will be published in a future press release.
Within the framework of Forum Expanded, SAVVY Contemporary will present an exhibition by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam: “Shadow Circus”, curated by Natasha Ginwala and Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung. The show will open on February 7 and remain in place until March 10, 2019.
During the Berlinale, the silent green Cupola will be converted into a lab cinema where all Forum Expanded programmes and a selection of Forum films will be screened. Each film presentation will be followed by time for a comprehensive discussion with filmmakers and special guests. The annual Think Film symposium “Archival Constellations” will take place here as well.
MARS, the café at silent green Kulturquartier, will be open for the duration of the exhibition.
The Marshall McLuhan Salon at the Embassy of Canada will once again serve as an additional exhibition location, and film screenings will take place at Kino Arsenal and other Forum cinemas.
The 14th Forum Expanded is curated by Stefanie Schulte Strathaus (section head), Anselm Franke, Maha Maamoun and Ulrich Ziemons. 05.01.2019 | Berlin's blog Cat. : FESTIVALS
