Exclusive: LINE OF DESCENT Producer Greenlights Roland Joffe TV Series

Established film and television producer Guy J. Louthan has greenlit his next two original productions as part of his upcoming slate of projects for his newly formed company Palanquin, it was announced today by Louthan. Headed by Louthan and Academy Award Nominee Roland Joffé, Palanquin will focus on producing South-East Asian productions including India-based film and television projects using both local and English language scripts with Western style production practices and storytelling that appeal to the global audience.

The first greenlit production is the television series “Mata Hari”, written and to be directed by Joffé who is best known for his masterful work in The Killing Fields and The Mission. Producers are John Fitzgerald and Julian Grimmond (CBS’ “The Amazing Race”).

“Mata Hari” is a vivid and emotional eight-part series that charts the extraordinary life of Magritte, a girl who escaped an abusive childhood, fled to the Far East with a brilliant but manipulative adventurer who is more than twice her age, and immediately falls into the dark and threatening world of espionage.

Joffé says of his upcoming series, “‘Mata Hari’ is a true story buried in myth. A fabulous untold story of female empowerment, and a gut-wrenching tale of love, loss, loneliness and above all courage.”

The second production is the Fargo-esq feature film thriller Call Center which follows an Indian call center operator who coincidentally cold calls a family in Alaska during a home invasion. After hearing their distress through the phone, he spontaneously decides to cash in his life savings and travel to the US in a somewhat misguided but heroic attempt to save the family. Call Center is written and to be directed by Rohit Batra, who is also producing alongside Louthan. Batra wrote, directed, and produced with Louthan their first “proof of concept” film from their production business model – the anticipated Indian gangster thriller Line of Descent starring Brendan Fraser and India’s top-leading talent, Abhay Deol, Prem Chopra, Ronit Roy and Neeraj Kabi.

Line of Descent is a gritty tale about a dysfunctional mafia family at war with each other after the death of their father while an undercover officer is called in to take the crime family down once and for all, and by any means necessary. The film will have its market screening debut for buyers at the Berlin-based European Film Market in February. Elisabeth Costa de Beauregard of Storyboard Media is repping worldwide rights to the film.

“Having filmed in India over a number of years, I’ve seen the rapidly growing audience of middle class and highly educated Indian consumers grow interested in seeing more contemporary, modern stories than the standard Bollywood fare. Grittier and maybe darker than the Indian standard, but definitely in Hindi.” Louthan comments. “Our concept is to deliver films to the Indian and South East Asian audience under the American production system with full financial transparency and creative involvement. Most importantly, films that combine Local and foreign locations with known English speaking and Asian cast in English and local languages.

An industry veteran, Louthan has actively planned, packaged and produced more than 60 feature films and 30 TV or cable productions in over 40 countries for a large number of major international production companies including Columbia Studios, DreamWorks, NBC Universal, Sony, Warner Brothers, 20th Century Fox, Paramount Studios, Fox Searchlight, Miramax, Dimension, New Line, Focus Features, HBO Films, Killer Films, ABC, NBC, CBS, Pearson Television, All American Television, Spike TV, Netflix, FX and many others.
