DIE KINDER DER TOTEN - World Premiere and Q&A with Kelly Copper and Pavol Liska

Berlinale 2019 Forum Section opened tonight at Delphi Filmpalast with the world premiere of the Ulrich Seidl-produced Die Kinder Der Toten (The Children of the Dead), a loose adaptation of Austrian playwright and novelist Elfriede Jelinek's 666 page novel that she penned in 1995. Filmmakers Kelly Copper, Pavol Liska, producer Ulrich Seidl and some of the film team were all in attendance.

It's a silent film with German intertitles and English subtitles and occasionally some English in the intertitles when some characters are trying to communicate with the Syrian poets in the story. Mother-daughter difficulties, a woman's double who chases herself in one of the slowest on-screen chases through the countryside, Dutch bus tourists, a brass band, crying relatives watching old family reels and a Styrian restaurant that initially won't welcome or serve starving Syrian poets. It's a wild and bizarre ghost and zombie story, which is all the more interesting after finding out that filmmakers Copper and Liska based their film on Jelinek's novel, which is only in its original German form, on first-hand accounts of people who have read the novel and could retell their impressions from it.

Also during the question and answer, which started with a brief welcome from Austrian producer Ulrich Seidl, Copper and Liska shared how Jelinek has not yet seen the film but she was given the script and okayed it. The two main actresses also took the stage for before the official Q&A began. Copper and Liska are well-known from their work with the performance and art collective the Nature Theater of Oklahoma (formed in 1996 by the pair) and one can only imagine that their film will surely have some wings and make its rounds to a number of interesting international film festivals. Copper gave a nod to B-movies as being somewhat of an influence on their style in this film and it's clearly evident in some scenes.

The audience was really receptive and laughed along at the absurdity of some of the situations and the unique way that these filmmakers interpreted Elfriede Jelinek's award-winning novel, which will finally have a full English translation by Gitta Honegger available to the public later this year.
