Watch manufacturer Glashütte Original is extending its co-partnership with the Berlinale until 2016, and continuing its support of a talented young director from the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section with the “Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship”. Conceived for the development of a project, material and screenplay, the €15,000 fellowship is funded by Glashütte Original. “We are very pleased that for the third time now we will be able to award the ‘Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship’, which may be seen as both an incentive and a sign of appreciation,” comments Festival Director Dieter Kosslick.  

The Berlinale and Glashütte Original will award the fellowship at 11.00 am on January 14, 2014. On this occasion, the press will be invited to talk with the new fellowship holder; the previous winners, Annekatrin Hendel and Jan Speckenbach, will also be on hand to report on the state of their projects. The award ceremony and talk with the press will kick off the Perspektive Deutsches Kino’s press screenings which begin on that same day.

A New Jury for the “Made in Germany – Perspektive Fellowship”

Based on treatments that the directors from the Perspektive 2013 could submit until October 1, a three-member jury will pick the winner of the €15,000 fellowship. In 2014, the jury members will be Katja Eichinger, Frieder Schlaich and Andres Veiel.

“I think it’s wonderful that every year there are people from the film industry who are excited by the idea of the fellowship and show an interest in the projects of up-and-coming filmmakers,” remarks Linda Söffker, head of the Perspektive Deutsches Kino section, about the jury’s commitment.

Katja Eichinger

After completing her A-levels, author and producer Katja Eichinger went to England and studied at the British Film Institute. She worked as a film journalist for many magazines, including “Variety”, “Esquire”, “Vogue” and “Dazed & Confused”. In 2006 she married film producer Bernd Eichinger, who died in 2011. She published a biography about him last year. She lives in Munich and Los Angeles, and is currently producing Werner Herzog’s new film, Vernon God Little.

Frieder Schlaich

Under the name FILMGALERIE 451, producer and director Frieder Schlaich has run a film production, DVD label and film distribution company with Irene von Alberti since 1992. Schlaich’s first films, Paul Bowles – Halbmond (Halfmoon, 1995) and Otomo (1999), received numerous awards. His latest film, Weil ich schöner bin (Cause I Have the Looks, 2012), a political film for young adults, received the “Bronze Horse for Best Film” at the Stockholm International Film Festival Junior in April 2013. Since 2005 FILMGALERIE 451 has had at least one production in different sections of the Berlinale.

Andres Veiel

Andres Veiel is one of Germany’s most renowned directors. He has worked on projects that are, for the most part, situated between reality and fiction. For his films Winternachtstraum (1991), Balagan (1993), Die Überlebenden (The Survivors, 1996), Black Box BRD (2001), Die Spielwütigen (Addicted to Acting, 2004), Der Kick (The Kick, 2006) and Wer wenn nicht wir (If Not Us, Who? 2011) he has won more than 40 awards, including a European Film Award and several German Film Awards. Since 2005, Andres Veiel has taught a master class for documentary film at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie (dffb). From it have emerged films such as Sebastian Heidinger’s Drifter (Perspektive 2008, winner of the “FGYO-Award Dialogue en perspective”) and Sandra Kaudelka’s Einzelkämpfer (I Will Not Lose, Perspektive 2013).
