The theme for this year's Bahamas Festival is The Spirit of Freedom

4th Annual BAHAMAS INTERNATIONAL  FILM FESTIVAL (BIFF), showcasing leading independent film in the  paradisal Bahamian isles.

Extending premium hospitality to filmmakers, BIFF furnishes travel and lodging for accepted entrants. A filmmaker retreat is held at a surprise location the day before the festival commences, providing participants an opportunity to bond and create life-long connections.  Last year's retreat took place at Tiger Woods' and Ernie Els' estate, Albany House, with surprise dinner guest - and Bahamian resident - Nicolas Cage.  With industry professionals and distributors in attendance, BIFF provides opportunities for filmmakers to make deals and obtain distribution.

The theme for this year's festival is The Spirit of Freedom, said Leslie Vanderpoole, but the festival welcomes all genres and forms, and will host screenings in several different programs - including World Cinema and New Visions - regardless of theme. Other special programs include Family Films, Nordic Spotlight, Caribbean Spotlight, and the Caribbean Spotlight Script competition.

Many BIFF alumni have moved on to further success, including Tennyson Bradwell (DORIAN BLUES), David Gordon Green  (UNDERTOW), Lee Daniels (SHADOWBOXER), Ryan Fleck (HALF NELSON), and Gregg Araki (MYSTERIOUS SKIN).

MISSION AND OBJECTIVE Bahamas International Film Festival is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the local community and international visitors with a diverse presentation of films from around the world.

In 2006, the Bahamas International Film Festival showcased 70 films and welcomed over 40 filmmakers and industry professionals. The Atlantis Paradise Island Resort is one of the festival's founding sponsors, and hosts various festival events including the Opening Night Bash, Career Achievement Tribute sponsored by Lombard Odier Darier Hentsch, the Awards Ceremony and Closing Night Bash.

Awards are granted in major competition categories and include a grand jury award presented by Chopard, while the Caribbean Screenplay Award Sponsored by Ansbacher Bank comes with a $10,000 prize. Other major sponsors have included Versace, the Hard Rock Cafe, Federal Express, Bacardi, and Coca-Cola.

BIFF also offers a filmmakers residency program which aims to support Bahamian and Caribbean filmmaking by giving emerging artists the chance to pitch their projects for development deals through a series of one-on-one meetings. Previous success stories have found producers and investors for the making of their films through the Bahamas International Film Festival Filmmaker Residency Program.
